I've lost track of where this discussion has got to but is there any kind of plan to have a category for FAOs. It will almost certainly be abused but it is becoming a little tedious.

There are frequently threads directed to 'the experts' which don't take account of the expertise of others and are therefore self limiting. Particularly when there is a poster with more recent and pertinent experience.

And then there are the FAOs along the lines of 'Thanks Chumbawamba I've fixed it'

Not to mention the 'FAO Eric, are you about?'

Yes, you can avoid them but sometimes it is difficult to especially when they are in a specialist category rather than Chatterbank!

Please either a tightening/reminder of the rules or a 'Calling your Name' category.

Put it in perspective for Christ's sake all of you - what percentage do these threads make up of the number of threads on here. I would surmise peanuts.

The issue about attracting newcomers is not about zany threads or in-chatter - that goes on in any community or sub-community, it's more about overt hostility to newcomers, and most of us have been guilty to that - largely because of all the trolls about and some pretty asinine questions as 'openers'.
It is in perspective, we are responding to a question regarding FAO threads.

Right-oh DTC!
If we want threads that contain the fun we like, we may have to start some ourselves. Mine this afternoon was very serious, a corpse on my lawn is not funny.
Anyway can you all go away...............I just want to talk to Jack.
if I can just put my view here, when I see something I wish to read and maybe comment on, I will as this is at the moment a public site. The screen in front of me is just that, it's not a person, do I take offence if the screen comes back with a different viewpoint, no.

Bugger off Craft this is my thread and I call the shots,
It is in perspective, DTC, we're discussing eccles' OP and the responses. The number of such threads overall may be relatively low in the overall new traffic, but they often go on for pages - never mind the quality, feel the width....
mine's a shot of vodka, Eccles
In six pages, sherrard, the debate has swept up the mad/fun threads.....the arguments that many have put forward as to FAOs that are useful and open to comments from others for experience, qualifications or whatever, I fully agree with. Come to think of it, I can't think of any that have deliberately excluded others or newbies, though I am sure such evidence can be assembled out of the hundreds of thousands of threads on here since AB emerged from the ethereal internet gas.
Love it Eccles :-)

JNO, I'll pour you a double and join you!
And that's my point, boxie, so what? 'Freedom of speech' seems to being suppressed here too - or at least a risk of it.
I agree
with DTC
Sorry for the short poem.

Quite, quite simple.

This has been going on for years, the problem now is that the "old guard" is getting jealous as a new breed is moving in on their territory.

Some people never realise that "their day" is coming to an end.
Ed's point, though, about the banter being between a few people only, and therefore quite off-putting for other people to join in, is valid, as several seem to endorse on this thread. Your naming Tony against that picture - for instance - why tony, why not any of the rest of us, is that an in-joke? - I don't get it. It's the "not getting what this thread is about" which is also causing concern, evidently.
Don't be daft sqad................you're still here.

JNO, I need topping up; how are you doing? Or was that being exclusive?

If that was interpreted as being exclusive I have a big, imaginary, bottle of Grey Goose on the side. Bring your own mixers...I've run out.
(i) 'cos tony can take humour as more than amply shown around here over the years and he has a rich sense of fun too, not only in naming folk, teasing them and all the rest and (ii) in the knowledge that it would wind you up. I found jth's comment on sackcloths brilliant. As I did baza's sharp comment!
