Last month in the Religion section of Answerbank a member claimed that God is Love and that we should return the love.
I do Not believe in God but as the following is News, I thought it worthwhile posting in this section and asking ..."Is this anywhere near proof of a loving God" ??
There are many many other examples you could have used, sickness, murder, natural disasters etc but this example makes the same point, that it shouldn't be like this, that something has gone wrong.
Some would say that this is God's test for both the children and their parents; others would say it's as a result of man's free will given as a result of disobedience to God. I say nature can be cruel. Poor little kids.
When a cousin died some years ago her funeral service was held at the local Methodist chapel.I remember at the service the minister saying that what happened on earth was outside of God's control but that when we pass he takes care of our soul.I often think back to that when we read about the virus and all the other problems such as this.

_________
Can you try and make sense of that for me because I'm clueless?
//the minister saying that what happened on earth was outside of God's control //
If God is omnipotent, as his followers claim, nothing is outside his control. If we are seeing here the result of man’s ‘sin’ against God, as Theland intimates, then God must have intended travesties of nature such as this to be the result of that ‘sin’. He has no excuse. What an abominable creature!
Proof is a bit strong. If there is a God then it seems to need to stay hidden. Anecdotal evidence from people's experiences though. You can choose to believe their interpretation or not, as is your preference.
I have always seen Christians as constantly having to apologise, excuse, and explain the baffling behaviour of their 'loving' God, which is constantly at odds with anything approaching the parameters of love in any sense of the word.
They always wring their hands and sigh and quote 'original sin' - making it Man's fault which conveniently explains all the horrors of the word, while giving God a swerve from any responsibility for any of it.
i love this argument from Gervais. If you took all the science books away and destroyed them in 1000 years they'd all be back with the same content because they are based on verifiable, testable results. Genius! I'm going to use that!
I think what he means is that if you could erase all the knowledge of the last 1000 years of scientific development, it would all just come back and be the same because it's science, it's repeatable verifiable etc.
Stephen Hawking answers the question better than anyone I've seen. I highly recommend his final book, "Brief Answers to the Big Questions." Chapter 1: Is There a God? Answered in about 14 pages.
indeed pixie, E will always = MC squared, all of maths will always be the same, all the experiments will always be repeatable etc. Things may be updated, augmented etc.
If someone is comforted by a a belief in a diety - and human nature is - then awkward questions make the believer uncomfortable, so a ready script of responses to questions accompanies all faiths.
For Christians, it's 'free will - nice and simple, covers everything.
