In the Georgian style ad - anyone else think the guy at the end says 'I've got the Clap!!! (he actually says - I've got the clamp - meaning a denver boot!)

In this ex-naval household the word 'clap' means something medical and not very pleasant - if you get my meaning!!

Sounds as if they all have the Clap..........horrible annoying Ad
Fairly common knowledge that clap is slang for syphilis/gonorrhea
I know it's 'clamp' mayennaise but I did giggle the first time I heard it as I thought it was 'clap'. Same meaning in my household btw.
Clap is syphilis, pox is gonorrhea. (ex-forces).
Question Author
I wasn't sure if it was widely known slang - and I hate the ad as well - just caught my attention the first time I saw it.
Actually Canary, clap is slang for gonorrhea, pox is slang for syphilis

Wrong way round Platus
If you check with Cambers gen2 you will find it's the other way round.
Thanks for the correction, much obliged
I did platus: Chambers 1998 edition.
bottom of page 303, bottom of left column clap = gonorrhea
Which edition are you using?
My fault, typed them the wrong way round. Obviously these diseases can make you go a bit dyslexic.
Pretty sure this is a deliberate joke by the advertisers
That's what I was thinking Zeuhl.
Zeuhl, I think you're right. Venereal diseases were rife during that period. All those little black stickers on posh people's faces weren't just for decoration - they were to cover up the pox scars.
