Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me, I want to have my pup spayed, but cannot afford the £170 that my vets has said it costs, I am not entitled to any discounts as I am a student and do not qualify for anything. I was wondering if anyone knew of any organisations that help with the costs of the operation. Thanks all :)

Have you phoned the PDSA?
Hi roxie, contact either pdsa or friends of the animals . Either organisation may be able to offer financial help with such a good cause. Good Luck
how are you going to afford all other vets fees and the costs of bringing up a dog?
call a few vets for prices.

Thanks all, I will ring around, as it's my first dog, I didn't know where to start! I work as well as in uni, so other things for her are easier to pay, its just £170 is abit steep for a payment going out in one go, if that makes sense.
Roxie, as money is tight perhaps you should think about taking out pet insurance as you never know when your dog will need to see a vet.
also chat with your vet before the op and explain your situation - many of them will let you pay off over a few months which may help - depends on how well you know them
There are also some vets that concentrate only on neutering and vaccinating and they are able to offer cheaper rates. We have one in Norwich.
Another thought - ask around at other vets. We have just changed vets from a chain to an independent, and we are amazed how much less we are paying for consultations and treatment.
The other thing is....you can't just have your bitch speyed at any time. You need to have them done at around 6 months [which imo is too early] or wait until three months after the first season is finished. With that in mind, could you not save up for the op or pay it off in advance at your vets?

What breed of dog do you have? I know it depends on weight but I have been quoted £110 for my bitch to be spayed so I think it does vary quite a bit from vet to vet. As said, ideally you should wait unitl your bitch had has had her first season (is it a 'she') before so even if you put £20 a month away or so, it wouldn't seem such a big amount. I ould speak to the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and PDSA and any local independant charities - if they are unable to help, they'll usually advise you can - without criticising, they tend to try to do this anyway so do try and not be palmed off easily. Good luck!
Try your local dog warden or dogs trust neuter scheme co ordinator for your area.

hi thanks all, my pup (well prob not a pup anymore) is 14 months and just came into her second season, so unable to have her spayed for a few months now anyway. Thank you all for your responses :-) xx
hope all goes well roxie - good luck
Go with my plan then...put some pennies away each month and the bill won't hit you so hard!

yes i will lisa, thanks for everyones help and advice though :D XX
where do you live ? because in East London there is Celia Hammond rescue and though her main interest is cats they do spay dogs at a much reduced rate.
This might sound daft but have you rung other vets to check prices ? I think the PDSA only accept people on benefits and you have to prove it.You could ring Battersea Dogs home and ask do they have a list of vets/organisations that may help.

Thanks everyone. Yes I know, the prices are ridiculous, but they know that people will pay it. I've started putting a few pennies aside Xx
