I was in the garden today and I heard something resembling a sheep.
When I looked around I saw my dog (gsd) throwing up on the grass, I went over and he seemed ok and I guessed he was just getting rid of a piece of undigested bone.
He was pretty intent on sniffing what he'd don and I told him to come away and leave it alone.
When I came back 5 minutes later with a shovel of sand, I saw he'd eaten it.
So why the heck do they do that ?

It was valuable food, he threw it up because he was having trouble digesting it, he would have chewed it up smaller then eaten it again.

Because it smells like food.
As far as he was concerned,it was still edible.
Waste not, want not.
It's what dogs do!!
These are creatures that lick their own bottoms - why would eating sick be out of the question?!!!!!

Well that sounds about right Ratter, he don't seem bothered much about chewing, just gulping!
So good he ate it twice ;-)
Because when he had finished he thought to himself that was great - I could just eat that again!
If he was out in the wild-fending for himself-he certainly would eat anything available...even his own sick as long as it was not poisoned.
Mountain hare on the Winter in Britain programme last night eats its food then eats its own poo just to make sure it gets all the nutrients out of it!
