My Dog Is Frantically Eating Grass, Ivy, Weeds, Anything He Comes Across.

Any ideas what's wrong please. Vets are shut. Any ideas? He's still doing it.

Is he healthy, no sign or symptoms? Does his belly feel soft or bloated?
Still alert, playing, reacting as normal?

My previous dog used to eat grass to make herself sick. Must've worked for her because she was 15 when she died.

LB, I can’t post a link but I just googled ‘dog eating grass’ and the kennel club has an item in it. Quite normal as far as I can tell. One of mine does it. Have a little Google.

Thanks all. It was the Ivy I was worried about as that is poisonous to dogs. Possibly the weeds also. I know they eat grass, no harm there. He was just frantic but we've fetched him in now and he's calmed down. We are watching him closely. Phew.

Zacs yes I've just realised where there is a vets that will be open if I need one. Thanks. He's just coughing a little bit now. Panic over.

Hi LCG and Zacs. I rang a vet to ask for advice. They have given me the last appointment of the day but if J stops the coughing/choking noise then I can cancel any time at no cost. Nothing for about 40 mins but he's just started again so whatever is causing it is still there. Poor little chap must be very uncomfortable.

If anyone's still interested I took him to the vet hospital and he is being kept in overnight to see if they can find out what's causing his problem. There are many things it could be. Hopefully it's nothing to do with his Pancreatitis. He was frantic when they took him away from me. I was frantic when they took £600 away from me and the same again to come possibly. I don't mind really, he's worth it. So hopefully no call from the hospital in the middle of the night.

Fetched my boy home from the vet hospital this morning. They scanned his head, neck, throat, chest and can't find anything wrong other than a loose tooth. He has whinged all day, is miserable, inconsolable. Not eating. I take a drink to him and he will take a little drop. I have to get an appointment either Monday or Tuesday at his vet to be checked by them and arrange, if he is well enough, to have his bad tooth removed. Hopefully once that has gone he will perk up as it must surely be hurting him. Other than that I am at my whits end as to what is wrong with him.

Fingers crossed it is his bad tooth, ladybirder. It's bad enough for us, when we know what is causing it and know it will soon (hopefully!) be sorted by the dentist, it must be worse for our pets.
It's good news though that the vet could find nothing else wrong.

Just a thought, would warm milk with maybe bread or biscuits soaked in it be more palatable for him? I'm thinking how cold water and hard food can be very painful with toothache.

Barry we've tried hottish water on his proper hard food and when it was cooled offered it to him. He completely ignored it and us, just staring straight ahead. He's had his first evening's medication, one of which is a pain killer. Made no difference at all. The way I feel now I am going straight down to the vets tomorrow and refuse to move until they take his tooth out. Just hoping one or preferably both of us get some sleep tonight. Poor J he's usually such a happy loving boy.

LB, I know you’re worried but I just thought I’d say that my dogs are really out of sorts with this heat. Like limp rags. No enthusiasm for anything. It could be something as simple as that. I hope so.

Oh bless them N, not like them at all. No J doesn't like the heat but my flat faces east and people remark on how cool it is when they enter. You could be right I don't know anymore. The one bright thing that happened was when one of the foxes dared to show itself on the fence. J shot out to see it off. So there is life in the old dog yet;-)
