The people next door have a lovely young black cat (about 2 years old) they dont have a cat flap, we do for my 2 cats. They go to bed at night and leave their cat out, every morning their cat is asleep somewhere in my house. I dont mind but my cats do and because they are old I think they get upset, well cats version of upset. How can I stop the black cat from coming in without being cruel.

how about those collars with a magnet thingy on that just let your cats in, or if you know your neighbor how about mentioning it, They may think that its out roaming or whatever cats do. Mine (i have three ) refuse to go out unless accompanied in the garden and just line up on the bed to snooze.
we recently found out that our cat went straight round to next door when we put him out at night. We didnt know until they told us so its worth telling the owners about it. I agree with getting one of those magnetic collars for your cats they do work. As for us we have decided to share arthur and he now has the best of both worlds

Thanks for your replies. I already have a magnetic cat flap and Blackie just head butts it and gets in. I will just have to put up with it. I have told my neighbours and they just laugh. I took photos of their cat fast asleep in the bathroom sink. I think Blackie wants to live with us, I just dont like my old cats to be upset.
Sounds as if you have been adopted! Is there any way you can let this cat come into your home but restrict its access so he can't go near yours? The other option wopuld be to lock your cat flap at night but that would mean that yours would have to be in all night. We had a stray who used to come in, eat our cats' food then settle down and in the end I left a cat basket in the kitchen which he took over. My cats were not amused but they eventually got over it. Your neighbours are obliged to be responsible for their cat's welfare and should provide somewhere it can sleep at night if they are leaving him out.
I dont get why people even lock cats out at night!
I have 6 and would never ever dream of looking any of them any where at any time! (unless in a cat box for the vets or so on!)

Just thought I'd let u all know the latest. When I got home this afternoon There in the sunshine on my patio were my two and Blackie enjoying the day together. I opened my door and the 3 of them walked in and sat in a line looking at the food dishes. Looks like my neighbours have lost a cat and I have gained one. Well thats life....thanks for your replies.
and hopefully you will all live happily ever after.
I'm really pleased to hear that - it sounds as if he will be a lot better off with you!
