From 75 to 80 degrees F. Some species such as the white cloud mountain minnow prefer cooler remps whereas gouramies and livebearers prefer warmer.

I've always kept my trop tanks at around 78-80
When you buy tropical fish the people at the store should advise you as to the temp to keep the fish at, and which fish go best together. They're the best people to ask for advice because they work with them every day.
Unfortunately, most shops employ "saturday help".....young people who come in on saturdays and they tend to know very little about fish.

As a result, you should always do your homework on fish....get a good book and choose the fish you like or look on the net.
