Stray Cat

Hi - You may remember my recent post about taking in a stray cat a couple of weeks ago - When we took him in he was so happy, always purring, padding up and down and would jump on your knee, but he has completely changed. He will not sit on your knee new, never purrhs, hisses and attacks you if you try and stroke him. Very occasionally you can get a quick stroke his head, but he soon turns. He is always hungry and when he isn't eating he just lies flat out on his side and doesn't even lift his head up. He is only four - five yrs old and he just doesn't move around. He is very fat and seems only to go out for short spells. We have two other cats who have almost accepted him, there are a few hisses here & there but no fights. I have know idea why he has turned out like this - thanks for any help

My first thought was that he was now a cat teenager - but he is too old for that.

Is it possible he has been hurt in a fight and has an abcess? Does he still have his 'bits' ?

It's weird - you would think that his behaviour would improve - especially since the cats all seem to be getting on with each other.

He has been done. It is so strange he was adorable for the first few days. I took him to the vet for jabs and wormining tablets and I put it down to him feeling a bit unwell. He was upset about going, but I would have thought he would have got over it by now. This coincided with meeting the other two cats. He used to sleep on our bed but I think the other cat has scared him off. Maybe its still early days, but he is so strong that he could really hurt you. I am taking him to the vet again as I need to make sure he is ok as he just lies there, flat out on his side. I have never seen him sit up except when eating!

have a look at this site. my vet recommended this when we were having issues introducing our cats. its supposed to be a general stressbuster for them.

Thanks - I am taking him to the vet to be checked over this week, but you website got me searching and I am drawn to the possibility he is very stressed and not such a tough boy afterall. I am trying some new techniques that may help. thanks
