Names for my new dog
17 Answers
I have just adopted a 1 1/2 yr. old English Springer Spaniel from the local shelter. They have tagged him as "Baron", but I don't think it suits him. He hasn't been able to come home yet though, as he has an upper respitory infection (I think this is kennel cough). We made a real connection when I first saw him, even went back for a second visit to be absolutely sure that he was the "one". You can see his story in his eyes. My only two choices in a name is to remain with Baron, or perhaps Avery. He's so sweet, and I can't wait to have him home. Any ideas? And no, he doesn't look like a Chance, even though he's getting a second one with me. Thanks everyone!

Do you know if Baron was the name he has had from a pup, or was it just a name given to him at the shelter.
If he really knew his name from a pup, one of the names beginning with a 'B' sound would help him get used to his new name more quickly. Good luck with your new pal, I'll bet you can't wait to get him home. Let me know what you choose.

We got a new dog six monthes ago. He was two month old when we got him. Unwanted present.
He is an hungarian vizsla quite a rare breed. However he came with the name Jake. It did suit him But I wanted to rename him Stan I think its an ace name for a dog. I also had a dog named George. I lost the battle to change Jakes name.
Sorry if you dont like the names i used.

Not sure I would agree that a Hungarian Vizsla is a rare breed - there were 1,306 puppies registered in 2008, the eighth most popular gundog out of 36 breeds.
I find dogs soon adapt to any name, and mine all have nicknames as well which they answer to.
My first GSD was a Barney, but my mum always called him Baron.

^^^^^^ I'm lovin your suggestion lank....inspired.
My son almost ran over a flea ridden stray a month ago & he brought her home. So now we have the most obedient, gentle little pooch & she's almost well again.
I think it's the intonation in your voice when you say the name that they respond to.....that and giving them food!

''Quoat'' Lankeela

Try insuring one and you will be told they come up on the rare breeds list...Look how many labrador puppys were registered in comparison and i think that might put thing into prospective.

How about Buddy ... he will be a friend to you and your family, so Buddy I think will be quite appropriate. It also starts with a 'B' so coincides with keeping the initial letter of his 'kennel name' which he might recognise. Well Done to you for adopting him and I'm sure he'll bring you years of happiness. Sounds like he'll be going to a good welcoming home. Good Luck !
Actually his color is liver and white, but Barack is an interesting choice Lankeela.
George has already been taken (thugulike).... besides that name fits a Mastiff much better.
Rowan seems quite nice.
I thought of Dutch over the weekend... still debating that one. Then this morning, I turned on the radio and heard Gnarls Barkley and had a brainstorm...yes! and went on about my day. Grabbed some chinese take out for lunch, and lo and behold - the same Gnarls Barkley song was playing! Could be a sign...does that make me crazy? ha ha!
So, it could very well be Barkley - I'll keep you all posted as the plot thickens.
The shelter called me yesterday to say it would be another week before they would release him to come home :(
as he still needs his meds to get better.
He has no idea that a new collar, lead, and two toys await his arrival. Can't wait!
