Cats Name?

I'm soo excited today we're going to pick up our new baby, A rescue cat (tortoishell) a 4 year old female Trixie. However we are not too keen on the name and would like to give her a more sophisticated name, Any idea's.
..and is it a good idea to change her name or not & how long d'ya think it'll take her to get used to it?

I think some people would say not to change it, but our cat came from a rescue centre (aged 2-3) and no one knew his name. we called him Colin (sophisticated, huh? lol) and he certainly knows that's his name.

my favourite girl's name at the moment is Phoebe.....that's quite sophisticated....

I am sure she would get used to it. Mine all answer to the word "dinner" irrespective as to what they are called.

I had a tortoiseshell called Shelley. We had picked the name before we picked the cat (we already had a Homer and decided to go the literary route) but it worked ouot quite well given her colouring.

oh how exciting a new cat in the family. Im sure you will have great fun together. No sure about the name bit, 4 years they mite be used to it. have fun anyway xxx

If she is coming from a rescue centre they probably gave her the name recently anyway. Today I rehomed a dog for our breed rescue, we knew his name (Cheeky) which the new owner will be keeping, but even dogs soon get used to a new name.

wait a while and see what name the cat deserves - always remembering that tortoiseshells are invariable brilliant mothers. Realise you are getting Trixie from a re-homing centre therefore she will be speyed but her mothering characteristics will be there. Maybe try something from the classics? Good luck with her and hope you have very many happy years together.

I didn't know what to call Alfie (my rescue dog). So I didn't change his name. Alfie it was ! And boy, does that name suit him.

My cat (sadly no longer) had a great name: Bea (Beatrice). I think lots of people phase through different names other than the one they were originally given, mine got changed to BeeBee, Beebie Geebie, Beanie Beebie and latterly Puddum !

Mejytnua, Pronounced Mej-it-noo-a, you'll soon work out why i thought of that name.

Wow! what a lovely responce from all of you, thankyou too for all your good wishes. We definately like Phoebe but mainly because our eldest grandaughter is Phoebe, I like Portia too, thinking on that one, but at the moment top of the list is Gypsy, you may be interested to know Carmalee the lady at the rescue centre told us she had been wandering about for weeks before they picked her up and she was heavely pregnant and produced 4 black kittens soon after. My husband sais Gypsy would suit her because she was a wanderer and also it sounds very like Trixie so she's likely to take it on easier. we'll give her a few days to settle and then decide.

She's taken to hubby already she's curled up fast asleep on his lap & he's dozing too (What a pair) haven't heard her purr yet but he's making those noises.............

Awww how lovely! Mine do the dinner thing too haha :)

My first rescue cat was a 2 year old beautiful male cat. They had called him Sylvester, no idea of his real name as he was found as a stray. I renamed him Heathcliffe, partly as Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books and it so suited him as he was so handsome and a bit of a rugged wanderer :)

I lost him last year then a few months later rescued two more little girls who the centre had named Cheeky and Squeaky! I decided that such beautiful little girls needed proper beautiful little girls' names so they are now Anoushka (Nush) and Mishka (Mish). I currently have Mish curled up by my head on the sofa while Mish is out playing in the snow.

Have never had a problem with them adapting to new names though Mish does get called Cheeky Cat often because she is :)

I love names like that, Talia was another on the list. I also love literary ones and such. Have friends with cats called Hemingway and Attlee.

Really, you could call her whatever you want; cat's respond mostly to tones of voice rather than actual phonemes (although having said that, they do seem to favour calls that end in -ee).

In terms of name suggestions; the current beasts in my life are called Beryl and Tilda, but I've know Bootsy Boy, Wiggy Woo, Moley Dibbers, Teddy Whoppett and Patrick Raggins. The possibilites are endless...

I practiced calling names out as if I was calling her, and you're right bh the ones that sounded more convincing were those with an eee sound at the end:ie Molly, Polly, Dolly. In our neighbourhood we've got a couple of Molly's so steered clear of those.
We.ve plumped for 'GYPSY' and she's taking notice already.
