Take it out and stay out with it until it has done it, every time it has eaten, slept, played, and other times in between.

Also clean the carpet thoroughly to get rid of any lingering scent mark and never leave the pup unsupervised at any time unless it is for a short time in a crate or playpen that you have trained it to be in. Once he has done his business in the right place go over the top with praise and a really yummy treat. NEVER yell at it or punish it for going in the wrong place

I realise it doesn't work for everybody,but I taught my border collie two words,yes and no, collies usually get the message soon,good luck.

Thank you to everyone who answered but I have tried just about everything and its as if he holds it in until he gets home.
Just had him out for 3 hours and nothing till we came through the door.
I am wondering if it is a psychological thing.

Its because he thinks he's going in the right place! To retrain, as i said clean really thoroughly then dedicate a weekend (or maybe more but not much more) to constantly supervising your dog, never leaving it alone, not at night either. You have to be really calm and gentle for the whole time and watch pup like a hawk. keep him really close to you indoors, maybe even on a lead and as soon as he shows the slightest sign of needing to go, take him outside and wait till he does, then the huge praise thing. Dogs are smart, the Aha! moment will come and then you just have to reinforce.

you say "gets home" have you got a garden? Its easiest to teach him to go there.

I dont have a garden.
i live upstairs in a flat.
It is a huge backgreen we have so it would take me about 2- 3 minutes to get downstairs. .

you can still teach him to be clean the way that i have said but it will mean a load of running up and downstairs at all hours of the day and night.

That does not bother me at all Woofgang.
I knew I would have a lot of work when I took him.
I was made redundant from work in October so I have all the time in the world for him and take him out 3 times a day for 2 to 3 hours at a time.
I have also booked agility and swimming lessons for him.

been away so couldn't answer earlier but do repeat - BC in flat- not good. When you've held as many paws as I have as yet another one of this breed is euthanised due to 'behavioural' problems you will maybe understand my reaction. I don't want to get into a debate about this and fully accept you got the pup for the best reasons. I wish you and the dog the best - and that's genuine.

Thanx for your reply.
I do realise it would be better if we had a garden but as I explained earlier I do have him out most of the day and he seems not to have any behavour problems so far other than the toilet thing so hopefully I can get that sorted soon. All in all he is a really happy wee soul.

as you have posted another query about your border collie i.e. will castration help with his problem - seriously suggest you log onto a reputable Border Collie resue site for advice. This breed has been cultivated to express very definite working breed characteristics - they are full on working dogs - if they are denied their 'calling' , problems will occur and manifest in many ways.. They require enormous amount of physical activity (bred for rounding sheep) plus maybe even more mental stimulation (second quess where a sheep is going etc ) they are a strongwilled breed too (think about what's required to herd a flock - a wimp dog won't stand a chance of facing down argumentative and seriously stroppy sheep) - having said that they are so slavish to please you, their owner. -Get the picture - quite complicated in a domestic environment? they also have a habit of getting seriously OTT when their only exercise is chasing a ball - they get manic- really not a substitute for their heritage. Also having said what I have, lots of BC have been successfully rehomed into a domestic environment and lived very happy lives. Regretably millions more have been euthanised cos of a lack of understanding of what the breed requires. Saying this not to be arguementative - only cos I'm very involved with the breed.

You have to take him out a bit more,and put white vinegar on the site of the pooping,it discourages them from doing it.
