I'm almost embarrassed to ask this but i am often wakened through the night with a sound that can only be described as that like a baby crying.....it is infact my cat (indoor) it only happens at night and never when i'm in the room. Its fine when i shout shoooosh she stops but i'm wondering what earth she is doing!!!

Is she wanting me up out my bed perhaps because she is bored?
TIA

Did you not know that the cats rule the house?
My cats (well, two of them) call out - sometimes I think they are just having a grumble to themselves but other times, they want to know where we are, if we are in. I just shout back yoo-hoo then once they hear that, they either "say" no more or come rushing up to find where we are. They do sometimes "speak" when they want me to know something - e.g. hey mum, I have a mouse, where would you like it?
how long has she been doing it?
when my cats (moggies) made that noise it was because they were on heat.
Some breeds make different noises, the orientals are more vocal than moggies.
Good point redcrx, my cats are all done boys so I don't have that problem. there might be a line of toms lurking and she wants to get at 'em (or not!).
murph does this if she wants a poo and needs her litter tray changing! (i change it every third day btw she can be a bit demanding sometimes though)

I read an article a while back that explained that the baby sounding meow has been honed by cats over the years to ensure that we react to it - it sounds like our young.

Look up "Furry alarm" on Google or check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0ffwDYo00Q

Susan - cat slave to Frankie and Princess Merlin
Simons cat - I love it
Simon's Cat is now in book form - not so good though.
Don't know if this helps but one of my moggies, Mo, does this baby crying sound sometimes when we are watching telly downstairs and she is sitting at the top of the stairs. My gut feeling tells me that she does it because she wants attention and she soon settles down when either me or my husband respond by playing or calling her name!

Thanks for all your comments guys...i'm coming to the conclusion that through the night when its dark she wants to know where I am cos like i said when i tell her to be quiet i never hear her again....yep she is ma bairn alright and i'd be lost without her.......
lol ain't that the truth!!!
My cat Caspar-who's deaf- does this a lot. Apparently it is an indication that a cat is 'lost'...due to the dark,etc........so I guess he is just looking for 'mummy'.....but he does sound like a cat on heat....
