one of our resident hares has just galloped flat out across the lawn - nothing chasing it so can only assume he/she was anxious to get out of the rain.

I hate when it rains and I get my hare wet! ;-)

:-) heathfied - he/she did show a fair lick of speed so maybe he/she had the same idea
You have resident hares - you lucky thing. The last time I saw a hare I was visiting a cemetry (many years ago) and I looked to my left and there he/she was just sitting there looking round, it lightened a sad day for me.
We have loads in the fields behind us - I love them. There will be less now that the combine has done its work and field has already been sown again with rape seed. Neighbour complains that they ruin his fruit trees and has shot some young leverets!!! I am angry.
O that's sad.
Question Author
that's rotten LL but unfortunately it happens.
Yes notas - there are two who regularly graze on the side lawns (I'm surrounded by farmland ) - have got very used to seeing them, they are such gentle creatures -the pair were around for a couple of hours the other day, lying beneath a tree then having a bit of a graze and I certainly I appreciate how lucky I am.
How lovely
We've got deer behind us, and I was frightened out of my life the other afternoon by a stag bellowing in the wood. Never have I heard such a loud noise. I thought it at the very least a lion or a bear!! The female does came running out of the wood, as did the hares and the birds all took flight too. I scuttled home with dog as quickly as possible.
Question Author
we don't have too many deer around here as it isn't particularly wooded although did see a muntjac happily grazing on the riverbank not long ago. No biggies that I'm aware of.
We used to have hares in front of the house when we lived in Skye. I spent hours watching their antics!
Question Author
I don't know what it is but there's something very restful about them - love sculptures of them too.
We often see deer, but there have been several stags around this year. Hubby almost came face to face with one a week or so ago and a friends dog chased one which was a bit worrying. That bellowing was a really frightening noise, I haven't heard it before in 30+ years of living here!!
I think hares are very dignified and wise creatures as well as being beautiful.
Question Author
agree LL - although according to another thread I see you are, henceforth, to be known "not so LL" :-))
:o( True rsvp
one dead deer on the lane near here - wouldnt have wanted to be the driver of the car that hit it as I bet it made a good dent. It caused an accident as somebody stopped to retrieve the beast and put it in the back of his van and some plonker ran up his rear end.....

Having said that, I wouldnt even want to hit a badger and we have had a fair number of those in the lane this year, pushing up the proverbial daisies.....the farmers do it deliberately if they see them on the way home from the boozer.....
Question Author
I believe a lot of badgers have 'accidents' on farms then get thrown on the side of the road to simulate a RTA.
Lottie, aren't hares protected? - I'd have reported the guy who shot the youngsters, that's horrible, countryside or not.
Question Author
Boxy your post got me thinking so have been on line to do a bit of checking - it seems hares are not a protected species but they do have a little under The Hare Preservation Society (think that's what it's called) but only in as much that leveretts cannot be sold between certain dates and hare may not appear on British menus between certain dates. Ireland has slightly different laws. Seems a shame hares don't have a little more protection cos they are really iconic creatures.
