Study on needless slaughter
39 Answers
I was just wondering while walking around the supermarket that a lot of the meats must go out of date and be unsold and thrown away. Bearing this in mind has there been a study done on how many lives of animals have been wasted because of the meat going unsold. It's actually a little disturbing for me to think really.

Thing is, I think you may misunderstand the nature of how beef cattle are butchered and sold. Even grocery stores, much less stand-alone meat markets, cut only the meat that they need to stock their shelves for the day. The beef half (or pork or lamb) is hung in a temperature/humidity controlled room where it will continue to 'age' as roasts, chops, steaks or other cuts are removed, leaving only scraps suitable for hamburger... excuse me... mince (I learn semi-quickly). Very little, if any goes to waste.

My wife eats meat and I believe in the human race eating meat. But my take on it this. If you are not prepared to kill it then you should not eat it. The human race is great and we struggle to preserve nature. But how is that apparent in the slaughter of animals? We had to fight for meat and now we have it already killed and on a plate. Children don't even know where it's from. Im not talking about a chicken breast I am talking about an animals life who is self aware and who would rather live as opposed to bieng killed.
Smilingcrow, there are lots of jobs that we would hate, or be too squeamish, to do, but which we benefit from others doing. We are not going to stop using the toilet because we couldn't face working in the sewage works. Working in an abbattoir may be one of those jobs. Why then, should people not eat meat unless they could face killing a food animal ? Somebody will do it for them, that's all that matters.
