Anyone keep them? I've got a jill arriving in the next couple of weeks. She's a kitten at the moment. I'm after some advice about keeping her as friendly as possible, smell, whether I should have her done. Just the ususal things? I'll be a newbie ferret owner.

Hey goods. I love ferrets - and these are some things i know...you'll definately need more than one. An unspayed female that isn't mated will get very sick and can die unless they have a jill jab (injection) which basically sorts out their hormones I believe. they sleep for about 20 hours a day but are active And very playful at dawn and dusk. they have super fast metabolisms so can't really ever get fat. the girls aren't as stinky as the boy tho they do have a distinctive odour, you will probably want an outdoor hutch for them.
Hope you have fun with them

I used to rescue ferrets and I showed my ferrets all over the country, I had 46 ferrets at one point. Many people do keep single ferrets but multiples are happier as they love to play. The Jills arent a problem with smell as long as their hutch is kept clean, the hobs will smell a little. the most important part of keeping ferrets is to handle them regularly, feed them well, they naturally prefer a raw meat diet but James Wellbeloved does a very good ferret food. As long as you handle them very gently, "never with gloves on" I judged and shown ferrets and only got bitten once, totally my fault.
Helloes lovely Joko, whats the crack round here then, I havemt even been lurking. Supernick entered my brain earlier, thanks to absolute 90s and I thought i'd come see what was going on and get some ferret advice. im trying to prepare well.

Some ferrets love water, others not so keen. I didnt walk mine on harnesses but most of them worked regularly and they had huge outdoor runs and sheds and cages divided into different levels so they had loads of exercise, so entertaining to watch the kits chasing each other around.
For bedding I used to hang up large hessian bags full of rags from the recycling shops, with a small hole the ferrets could climb in and out of, this kept them really clean and it was six inches off the floor so never got contaminated and it kept them free from smells, they loved it!
