Why do pubes grow curly and beards grow staight?

As a kid I was always told that if I ate my crusts it would 'make my hair curl'
so, could it be that when (if) you eat a crust it sinks to your stomach, which is near your pubes so it works on them, but is too far away from your hair to have any effect on it. And, just a thought, would rubbing crusts on your head make your hair curl?
