excel I also live in a first floor flat but I feed the birds everyday and watch them feeding close up. Treat yourself to one of these and fill it with sunflower hearts and hopefully, like me, you will get Robins, Greenfinches, a Chaffinch, Blue/Great/Coal Tits and possibly Blackcaps or even Goldfinches. Your local garden centre will be sure to sell a window feeder, probably cheaper than this one. Make sure you get one with a pointed roof so the Pigeons and Magpies can't sit on it and frighten the songbirds off. In Spring when the babies are born you can put live meal worms in it. Worth every penny.
I usually put fat balls out at the end of the garden, past two years we've had a squirrel who frightened the birds away, but brought in a rat from somewhere and a few mice. Fortunately a long way from my back door, so this year I'll let them find somewhere else.
We had a robin would come and eat from our hands as well Prudie. It's lovely when a wild thing comes and spends a little time with you (even if it is only cupboard love!)
