To be able to register as an approved breeder with the Kennel Club, dog breeding must NOT be your main source of income, this is to discourage people breeding for profit. Those people that only breed for profit are known as puppy farmers and reputable breeders really frown on this type of breeding.

I mean licensed by the local authority or some other government agency, not The Kennel Club who incidentally encourage the breeding of dogs with characteristics that are bad for their overall health.

The problem is that the accredited breeder scheme only covers pure bred pedigree dogs and is not without its own flaws. Things are gradually improving with the new Chairman of the Kennel Club though, but changes take time. More and more people are breeding so called "designer dogs", inventing breed names as they go along and demanding as much as £800 for their puppies! I find this so irresponsible! These dogs do not only inherit the good traits of the parents, but also the individual breed specific problems. Hence they so often end up costing a fortune in vets bills. Irresponsible owners then drop them into the animal shelters, to avoid having to pay the vets themselves. And then there is the problem with so many staffy crosses being bred purely for the moneys sake! If the cross breeding could be controlled we wouldn’t have to see so many healthy dogs being put down! But it is just a part of the problem. I am not a fan of the rspca, as when I asked them to help with stray dogs in our area, they never turned up. I also do not like the fact that so much money donated to them is not used as it is intended; i.e. huge amounts go on mailings that do nothing other than annoy people, instead of taking care of the animals in their care!

Your council should round up stray dogs, not the RSPCA.

I agree it is shocking but what is the alternative? there are too many dogs / cats and far too few homes for them. For many people it is coming to feeding either the pets or the family but not both.

The suggestions in hc's post at 1720 yesterday would be a good start EDDIE I think. There doesn't seem to be any real will out there to do it, I suppose it's not high on politicians' priority lists. I would have thought there would be a good few votes in it for them though.

carakeel I think they (rspca) must make money from their mailings or surely they wouldn't do it if it cost them more than it brought in?

I hope the majority of RSPCA donors have seen through the underhand tactics of the Daily Mail and continue to donate.
As I said earlier, the DM is trying to discredit the RSPCA because of the private prosecutions it brings against fox hunters. The DM's puppet masters are supporters of the hunt, or depend on the support of those involved in hunting.

Ok I have personal experience with this, having volunteered at an animal sanctuary. The neighbour of the sanctuary was reported to the RSPCA for keeping animal in poor conditions, these were farm animals and horses.
The RSPCA came out, closed him down, small scale farmer, and shot many of the animals, not even attempting to rescue them, they left the flock if sheep and in their absence we proceeded to move the flock to one of the sanctuaries fields. When the RSPCA returned they were not happy and the owner of the sanctuary refused to hand over the sheep, saving them as they were there to shoot the entire flock!!!! Many animals died there, needing a little tlc not death, being that a sanctuary was just next door too it wouldn't have hurt them to ask if we would take any animals.
So, yes they do good, but the also spend millions on posh new headquarters in a tiny village in Sussex, where I grew up, and is ridiculously expensive to live!! So land is at a premium! Fat cats lining their pockets, leaving less for the animals in need xx

Why does not the RSPCA run a cheap neutering service for cats and dogs? Vets fees are too high for many animal owners.

A responsible pet owner gets the pet neutered whilst young and should factor the cost in.
It is a fact that keeping pets is expensive. If you rehome a dog or cat from the RSPCA or similar it should already be neutered, but frankly if you can't afford the cost you can't afford a pet.
The cost of neutering is a pittance compared to vets bills for illness or injury.

They do daisy, at a local level, not national, for people on state benefits or very low incomes.

Isn't it the PDSA who run the neutering service for people on benefits? For their animals, I mean, not the individuals themselves.

Personally, I wouldn't support the main RSPCA, but I would support their individual branches and shelters, which are self-funding and don't benefit from the main RSPCA apart from the use of their name and logo.

Kiki I think the difference between the RSPCA and the PDSA is that the first one has local promotions for a limited period and the latter will look after your animal period if you are on certain benefits, including neutering etc, in return you give what you can afford.

Agree over the local RSPCA branches kiki, lots have a hard job making ends meet and spend a lot of their time trying to raise money.

I'm really baffled by that statement kiki. If local RSPCA branches don't receive funding from the main branch, what's the main one for?
