Sad...
43 Answers
Our beloved 15 year old spaniel died yesterday. She had seen the vet last week - he said she was a sturdy old girl and could go on for ages. Then she took a stroke at the weekend, seemed to rally round from that, but on Monday she went down hill quickly. Vet came and put her to sleep.
Massive hole in our family. House is so quiet, Mr P is devastated as they've been joined at the hip for half his life. Oldest daughter keeps asking where she has gone and is saying Mummy and Daddy are sad.
My heart is broken.
I don't have a question, just wanted to vent my grief amongst other pet lovers.

A happy family home with a dog to greet you on coming home is lovely. A dog for the kids to play with, to annoy, to dress up and put make up on, to let the dog sleep on their bed, to let the dog on the settee and the kids love sleeping in the dog bed. Mine did all that.
Still miss my Labrador. His lead is still in the car boot three years later.

2sp, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your spaniel, been there myself. What was her name? Can I add that having the vet come to you instead of putting her through the trauma of the journey to the surgery is the best thing you can do for a dog at the end of its life and I am so pleased you did that for her. Bless you. Keep hanging on. X
Thank you all so much.
I can't tell you how comforting all your replies have been. I don't like to get too upset in front of the kids or Mr P - I should be comforting him as she was his dog after all.
I dare say we will get another dog in time, but just can't face "replacing" her just yet. Maybe come the summer.

I'm sorry to hear about your wee girl. 15 years is a long time to live with a person (human or not) but I hope that you are surrounded by people who realise that she wasn't "just a dog".
I was more upset when my dogs/cat died that when my parents died - you live with an animal and its life is intertwined with you and the rest of the family.
It is nice that she was only ill for a short time and that her death was as painless as it could be.
I alternate from wanting to throttle my two cats to realising that they are my best friends and that I love them very much.

Not sure how old your daughter is, but these words might help ....
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Bet you have some wonderful memories - think of her and smile at the times she did something funny or naughty, probably a while ago now though athough my old girl can still be very frustrating - she barks to go out when she has only just come in and forgets she has just had her dinner! Although I swear about her sometimes, I will miss her when the time comes. Doesn't get any easier no matter how many you have.
good evening 2sp_
forgive me - i have only just noticed this thread
15 years was a good long life, and i am sure that you have all enjoyed every moment
naturally it is a painful time for you, and i would like to add my own deepest sympathies to the others posted here.
take comfort in remembering all the good times
