Everytime I Walk Past A Horse

It panics. Its happened several times now, my mate and i were taking a brisk walk, and she was walking like me, behaving same as me, and the horse did'nt flinch when she walked past, but when i walked past it went crazy, started jumping and going round in circles.....its happened so many times to me. I just can't go near a horse, without it going mad. Why is this??

Perhaps you look like someone who has mistreated the poor thing in the past.

I have a parrot that was cruelly treated by a man, and many years on, the parrot is still scared of my husband. My husband was not the man who treated him bad, I hasten to add.

You smell! Not in an unpleasant way, but horses are very sensitive to things we humans can't smell at all. I have horses of my own and they hate me wearing makeup or especially hairspray, but they won't leave me alone if I have chocolate in the pocket of my coat.

Are you afraid of horses? Here in the western U.S., we have lots of cow ponies... they sense fear in humans very readily and pick up on it...

Every horse i go near, and yes i am afraid of horses. Also i am sensitive to spirits.

The horses know something you don't but unfortunately I think only the horses will be able to tell you what that is.

We often get city dwellers here that want to ride a horse. We've got an old standby mare... great horse and thoroughly trustworthy... but ove the years we've had one or two 'tourists' that the mare would not countenance... I recognized it immediately and asked both prospective riders if they were fearful of horses. The woman readily admitted she was absolutely terrified but the other one was a man and he didn't want to lose face and said he wasn't. Still, 'Molly' (the mare) wouldn't let him near her... later he confessed he had nightmares about approaching, much less riding horses.
Thing is I could put a three year old child or a ninety year old on her and she would do just fine... but interject fear by the rider and all bets were off...

I'm sure horses can sense fear, or suppressed fear that some people give off. I know this from my own experience.
I think, the only way to overcome this is to spend some time around horses, bonding and building up a mutual trust.
Dogs and cat's also seem to have this sense and ability around certain people, I suspect body language has a lot to do with it

Stick some horsey treats in your pockets when you go walking. See if it makes a difference.

Agree with Clanad. Horses are very sensitive to anxiety. They can sense it in the way you move or may even, literally, smell it in your sweat. You can see this mental process in young thoroughbreds on racecourses; they can get quite worked up and skittish in this strange, frightening, environment,yet the moment a jockey gets near, or on, them they relax. He has such a confident and relaxed air towards them that they are calm, they feel safe, and trust him.

It applies to dogs too. Many a person finds themselves unable to deal with dogs because a dog senses anxiety in them, gets anxious as a result, and panics. It may even bite them

Horses don't like pigs, so if you have a pet pig, live near a pig farm or work with pigs that would certianly do it, and I can also 100% agree that some horses can sense fear and react badly to it, but I'd have doubted that was every horse you encounter.
