When can kittens start eating solid foods rather than feed off mum

Hi Anne,  I started feeding my recent kittens about a week after they had all opened their eyes.  try mashing the kitten food with a bit of water into kind of a paste and then smear it on their mouths.  they won't like it at first but they soon get the hang of it.  Mine are just 7 weeks now and won't stop eating !!!  They still go for a bit of a much off mum though, think it is more of a comfort thing.  good luck :-)

Kittens need to start weaning at about 3 to 4 weeks. Just mash up whatever food you intend to feed them..add some kitten milk (you can get it from the pet shops) to make it a bit sloppier. They do tend to wear most of it at first!!!

My little cat was abandonned at a farm and so was weaned at a very early age.  From a few weeks old the farmers wife fed the litter on watered down porridge (leftover from the farmworkers' breakfast) and she still goes doolally over oatcakes!

I don't think you should be feeding mum to the kittens.

Just an aside... if you are concerned that Mum isn't producing enough milk (suppliments can be bought ) continue to encourage the kittens to nurse. Nursing stimulates milk production. You can try weaning to a soft food (such as a canned kitten formula) at about 2.5 weeks, but they may not catch on for a while.
