Dog Not Well! Panting, Wet Chin

My sister-in-laws golden retriever is 12 years old. he is whimpering when he moves and panting. his chin is wet and his tummy is going in and out when he is breathing.
have rung the vet who said to bring him to emergency surgery tomorrow at 12. does anyone know what the symptoms could be?
I wanted him seen tonight because it sounds serious. any help ABers?

One day he went out into the garden in the sunshine and laid down and just died peacefully without a struggle. I still miss him.
Recently I've had to have our 14 year old terrier put down, he was a sparky little dog and I miss him so much.

So sorry to hear you news jubieanna I think everybody who posts in A & N has been through this at some time and we all know what it feels like.
Tilly, both my GSD's went the same way.It's heartbreaking when when you first spot those little signs and know that what ever you do things will only get worse.
