Do you need a licence in the UK to breed cats or operate a cattery?

So many unwanted cats.

Am under correction here but am almost 100% certain you need a licence to operate a cattery. Politness prevents me from offering any information about breeding yet more cats!:-)

Cat breeding is open to anyone as is dog breeding

Opening a cattery for income is commercial usage and needs planning permission:

Hi.....

Thank-you all for replying so quickly, my apologies, I should have been clearer....one of my neighbours has built a cage system and is having professionally installed cat barriers put in, he is being rather coy about what he is doing and just says he wants to protect his new kittens, but I think he is either preparing a breeding enclosure of building a cattery as he seems to be going to an awful lot of effort and spending an awful lot of money to protect a couple of kittens.

You know your neighbour - could he be starting up a Kitty Farm? I only know of a couple of people who have pedigree cats - moggies are the norm.

But if he is running a cattery (aka Cat Hotel by sappy crazy cat ladies) there are many laws and restrictions.

It may be that he is setting up a safe outdoor area for his own cats - I have friends who have put up something like a giant aviary for the cats to play in - minus the birds of course.
