i vcan buy a decent 2nd hand one but im afraid incase she doesnt like it as she will smell another dog from it , or am i wrong ?
whats a decent size for a dog crate for medium size chihuahua ? she will be kept in it overnights all the time as in last home she chewed all skirtings etc, wifey has moved to brand new home and kitchen units are expensive and cant affford her chewing anything, bones and toys dont work with her.

Cover it with a blanket for the night time and make a positive issue of it , making it its 'special den'. And never send it into the crate as a punishment. You can't train a dog to be secure on a night just as you can't train a child not to be frighted of monsters under the bed.
i will leave the crate for now, will try train her up more but im never there really in my ex,s. maybe she chewed last kitchen units because she was young and teething. i dont want to put her into a crate and if i did it would be a large one !
i did not buy another chihuahua as islay has said ( jumping in again with yet more negitive replies without first reading )
last thing i was is to ever mistreat a dog, love this wee dog but if she wrecks this ne house i will let her go , last house she chewed everything in site even skirting boards .
worst case scenario , let her go or buy her a big crate or try train her but shes 2-3 yrs old now, buy her more bones for nightime to play with and chew on.
my sister has a crate where she has kept 2 dogs in at night for last 3 yrs, half jack russells mix and they are / seem happy.

Simple answer is let the dog sleep in your bed - keep your feet warm and they feel secure too. Never understand why people are so against crates - of used properly they are a godsend, especially with young puppies and older rescued dogs. Working in rescue there would be far less problem dogs if people bothered to listen to advice from breeders/rescue kennels - yes ideally you train them not to chew when they are older but puppies need to chew to change their teeth. Older dogs often have the habit and it needs taking right back to puppy stage. A cage is also far better for travelling for reasons given above - and if you stay anywhere you know the dog has somewhere safe to sleep. My house has cages in every room and the dogs go and sleep in them or take a bone or chew in with them - rarely have to shut one in but they are quite happy if I do. Better to be safe and damage free than have the dog chew something it shouldn't and perhaps harm itself.
