Diabetic Dog Won't Eat
11 Answers
My dog was diagnosed with diabetes last week. Since then it's been a real struggle getting her to eat or drink, whilst trying to get the correct dosage of insulin. After a few visits to the vets I found that the only thing she seemed to eat was chicken. Now, this morning in fact, she won't even eat that. If she doesn't eat, I can't inject her. Does anybody have any ideas on what I can do to get my dog to eat, otherwise I'm pretty sure the inevitable will happen pretty quickly. Thanks

I'm supposed to give her the insulin at 6am. I've tried her with beef, scrambled egg, even just some beef dog chews and she just turned her nose up at it
A long shot, possibly, but have you got another dog (or can you borrow one)?
When googling for a possible solution I found someone who wrote that they'd encountered your problem several times, with the diabetic dog simply ignoring the food that was placed in front of it. However when another dog was introduced to the scene, the diabetic dog growled protectively and quickly gobbled up the food.

Basically what Chris said, try something with a real aroma so warm chicken soup works well and the presence of another animal competing for food sometimes encourages as well , 2 of my dogs aren't eating at the moment though and I notice this coincides with very hot weather, so she may just be off food because of the climate at the moment.
Thank you all for your replies. It turns out Bonny has an infection. Not sure where exactly the infection is but she's had a trip to the vet, and hopefully she should start showing signs of a bit more life pretty soon. Infections are quite common in diabetes sufferers apparantly. Thank you all again.
