5 month kitten

my 5 month old kitten broke her leg last week and has had pins put in it.shes a very active kitten we were told to keep her in strict confinement for at least two weeks, we 've made her a very big pen like thing out of cardboard boxes, shes got look out holes, toys hanging from it everything but she still doesnt want to stay in there, she will just meow and try and jump, jumping being one thing she really shouldnt be doing. anyone else been in the same situation?? any other way to keep her confined, or do we just have to keep a very close eye on her.

Hi cymru,awh poor wee thing!...I was thinking that if you look at this from her point of view,she doesn't understand what is happening,and now her wee world has changed. Maybe you're just going to have to keep a good eye on her,cos you know how determined our little darlings are,especially when you try to prevent them doing something they want to do!...Someone else might have a different opinion though!...Hope she heals quicklyxx

The best thing to keep her in would be a dog cage. You can get one from argos for about 30 quid and you can always sell it again once you are done with it. In one of these she can see all around her, and if you keep her in the main room of the house then she will still feel like she is in the thick of everything. Of course she still won't like it much after all she is used to her freedom however it is soo important that she is kept as still as possible at this point in her treatment. It can be hard to see them meowing a lot and so obviously wanting nothing more than to get out but you just have to do it for her own good, she will get used to it a bit after a while. Maybe get her some catnip for her to enjoy while she is in there, they do love it! Just try as best you can to make her confinement as bearable as possible...give her lots of attention, talk to her a lot and get her out occasionally for cuddles and grooming just make sure that when she is out she doesn't go mad.
It is gonna be a hrd time but persevere and it will all be ok in the end : )

The dog cage does sound like a good idea, she'll be able to see everywhere then which may calm her down, you know how nosy they are! good luck and harden your heart to her for a bit, I know she sounds sooo miserable but it is for her own good so ....

thanks for your suggestions guys!! shes getting a bit better. got a check up on wednesday so see if the vet has anymore suggestions. luckily im off work at the moment so i can keep a close eye on her! its just hard to keep her happy so she doesnt try and struggle and hurt herself further. i will definately look into the dog cage, although after her breaking her leg money is a bit tight lol but her health and happiness comes first!!

Rather than buy a dog cage, do you have any local shops who would post an advert in their window for you. If you worded it " Wanted - loan of a dog cage for a couple of weeks to restrain the movements of my little kitten who has broken her leg" some dog owner might have one they would be prepared to loan you for this short period of time.

A friend of mine had a cat similarly incapacitated so she bought a second hand travelling cot for a baby which she lidded with some chicken wire. This allowed no jumping and plenty of space for food, litter, bedding etc. She took the cat out and cuddled her as often as possible to make her feel she was loved rather than punished..........it was hard, but her cat made it in the end!
