Cat’S Poorly Tail

Our cat is a long head moggy but he’s really scruffy. A couple of days ago he got something manky in his tail but went out before we could sort it out. When he came back the next day, the hair had clumped up but he’d caught the clump on something and the result was a bald patch on his tale. He is now licking this so much that he’s making the bald patch worse. What am I supposed to do - is it a cone of shame job and try to keep him in or will he leave it alone and the hair will grow back?

Could he have had an abscess that has burst, hence no fur. You could try cleaning with warm salty water. Difficult to stop the licking though. Maybe a visit to the vet is in order.

There’s nothing sore there, it’s just where he’s ripped the hair out :(

You could get a cone of shame from Amazon or a pet shop. You are going to have a bad-tempered patient.

Cats have a tendency to hide the fact that they are unwell or in pain so keep an eye on him. They are worse than children sometimes.

I tend to agree with calmk and think an abscess or something has caused the bald patch, cat fur doesn't just pull out from being caught on something. The original mankiness could well have been pus.
I would keep an eye on him anyway for any signs of feeling unwell.

Thanks all - he’s seems fine in himself, eating, drinking, getting picked up, stealing bagels still in the bag and hiding them in his cat cave, etc

Any chance you could trim round it a bit more and dunk it in warm salty water to clean it?
Having just written that I remembered its a cat!

I was wondering if I sprayed it with anti sceptic if it would stop him licking it (because it tastes bad) and that would give it a chance to heal?

Try rubbing a bit of Germolene on it, sherr.

It’s human antiseptic that I bought for the cat (haven’t used it on him yet). He’s a bloody *** - he’s always getting into scrapes or stealing bakery products, he’s even brought home cake that he’s nicked.

Alba, he loves bakery products - our microwave is on a shelf and I have to put all bakery stuff on top of it. He had a bagel last night (that I’d left on the side) in its package and hid it in his cat cave thing, if I’m not quick with the shopping he’ll have the crumpets and he steals cake from other houses, I think he might like the yeast smell.

cats are odd.
ours has recently started wanting to go out the front door but demands to come in the back.

I'll try him with bakery products over the weekend, just to see if he'd be useful for a change :-)

He’s an attention seeking trollop and a terrible sulker. He’s more bother than the kids (but he is lush and we all love him but he hates himself - which we all think is funny).

If the cat is showing signs of distress and licking its tail then it may be injured. Take your cat to the vet, SherrardK.

Tony, he’s obviously been scared by someone he’s stolen cake from because he’s does not like men.
