Does anyone know why my teak garden furniture is so irresistible to wasps? They seem to love walking up and down the staves of the chairs. They don't bother with the table, just the chairs.

They chew the wood to make their nests
Question Author
Goodness me, do they? Thanks Woofy. That was an interesting link.
No mention of which cleaner and sealant to use though.
On a really quiet day you can hear them chewing the wood.
Soapy!
Yes, SJ - we can hear them chewing our trellis
you'd think they'd find something softer to get their teeth into wouldn't you?
You would think so but it seems that they have powerful jaws

There are plenty of trees about. Why choose my teak furniture?
They just want to be full of good chair.
They do it on the orders of the Queen. Anne, teak collector
Oh I have often seen them nibbling on the handles of my garden tools , I wondered why lol

Right, time to set up a wasp trap. I hate killing things though. :-(
Before you go on a killing spree, Tilly try wiping the furniture with peppermint oil....seems wasps hate the smell....x
They are obviously fussy about the wood they use, as am I. lol.
Joking aside use some soapy water with a splash of bleach, that should deter them. Just spray it over furniture from hand spray.
It you have any mint to hand, growing in the garden, you might like to try rubbing a bunch of leaves on the staves.
Are they really doing any harm?
Question Author
No Kandro, they are not doing any harm but I don't really want them flying around the chairs when we are using them. Someone might get stung.
