A mountain Lion is, by nature, no more aggressive than our house cats. But given that it is a helluva lot bigger any incident or attack could end badly. My heart tells me that the Lion was not to blame and should have been left alone. My brain tells me that the Lion has lost its fear of humans and that could turn fatal. Its pretty stupid to run a park that allows Big Cats...

no, yet again people are seemingly unaware of the dangers, i guess that they put the animal down as it had attacked someone before, doesn't make it right.
No. Just let it carry on attacking people:-//
I don't think it is fair, however they have followed their regulations.

Perhaps close the park to people and hope other predators don't wander onto the nearby housing areas.

It is of course us who shouldn't be there.

Very sad.
let the animals be, we are encroaching on their lands
Of course it was a fair decision. The animal was in a park open to the public.
Would the 'No's' still have the same opinion had that little boy been their grandchild?
Wild animals usually keep out of the way of humans, however, some go rogue and become dangerous like this one. Yes I think it was the only decision.
It's one of the main tourist attractions in the area.
close the park, relocate said lion, surely they could have done that.
I don't believe anyone in an emotional state, likely to call for vengeance rather than what's right, adds much to a discussion.
By the way, my first post was accompanied by what I hope is seen to be a sarcastic facial expression - x 2.
as if we didn't know.
As I doubt anyone of the comments so far are from people who have lived in a country where the local wildlife can eat you, I can assure you most will run away from humans. This one for whatever reason was not afraid and attacked a child. It needed to be shot and maybe the reason why it went rogue looked into. Capturing it and relocating it would have just exported the problem elsewhere.
It's a wilderness park. One assumes folk enter at their own risk. Parents/guardians taking responsibility for those too young to make a responsible decision. It would be a different matter if the cat roamed out of the area and got a taste humans. As it is, it's just the way nature is, and what the park is meant to be. One assumes a park authority gives ample warnings and as much safety as possible.
APG - // Would the 'No's' still have the same opinion had that little boy been their grandchild? //

Obviously not - but it wasn't, so that's a "If my aunty had a deep voice and muscles she'd be my uncle ... " argument, and it's irrelevant to the discussion.

That's a response I can entirely agree with.

There can always be an argument that the lion is doing what comes naturally, which is true, but this individual animal has developed a boldness and clear vision of humans as fair prey that means it would never be safe anywhere near people.

Not necessarily. It would depend how they identify.
LOL at ludwig
Indeed Ludwig - what used to be a standard phrase (slightly amended from my version designed to skirt around the on-site censoring software!) - has taken on a minefield of additional interpretations since it first came into common usage!!
Unfortunately, as the Lion has actually attacked a Visitor it is the only sencible descision ! I still think there is something basically wrong in having 'wild' animals in captivity ! (a wilderness park is still captivity , though better than a cage )
I am lucky enough to have lived in Southern Africa, Zambia /Zaire border. We sometimes had 'wild' animals wandering through our gardens !
Cat "behaves naturally" and has to be put down.

How I wish that applied to all the neighbourhood cats which their owners allow to slaughter the lovely songbirds in my garden, using "natural behaviour" as an excuse.
