having a discussion with husband. I have always referred to "smoothing" the cat or dog. He had never heard of that before meeting me. Does nyone else say smoothing (in place of petting or stroking)? or is it a regional thing?

Somewhat strangely, I've never really thought of 'petting' as something that you do to pets!
Even stranger still, I've heard Americans talk about 'spanking' their cats and dogs, which isn't as kinky as it sounds and definitely doesn't involve punishment!
When I were but a lad, in Suffolk, we kids used to 'coach' cats and dogs, which didn't involve any form of training either!
