My son has a puppy about 5 months old. He is in the process of training her, although it's been a longhaul as he and partner are working. This weekend we were all at my daughter's house for a BBQ, and although she had been out, she did a pooh UPSTAIRS ON THE CARPET IN MY GRANDAUGHTER'S BEDROOM. My GD loves her and plays a lot with her, but why would she choose there ? She also peed on the patio. I was the first ( and probably last time ) she had been to their house.

She got caught out and had to do it somewhere. Was your GD with her at the time?
Because she had to go. She has to be taken out very frequently and after eating and given a treat/reward every time she goes. Training takes time and patience, a bit like potty training a child
Peeing on the patio is OK isn't it? It's outside. Maybe the bedroom was quiet for her?
How the heck do they train her when they are working? They need someone there all the time.
You say it's been a longhaul, Sam but it's going to be even longer. Five months is nothing in terms of puppy training.

I am not sure Tilly. I thought it was more like Marking her Territory ? I do help and take her out midmorning, son goes home for lunch and then someone is home a couple of hours later.
She does her business on a newspaper when they are out and she needs to go. I had told them to take a newspaper and put it down when they visit, but, they know better. At the moment she is persona non grata , poor thing.
As you say, Sam. Poor little thing. The new surroundings would have confused her too. What breed is the puppy?
I was going to ask where she goes at home and if it's on newspaper she will have been bewildered being at a strange place with no newspaper provided, also possibly nervous with lots of new people about so found somewhere quiet. If I'm honest your son should have pre-thought this, at 5 months you can't assume a puppy will go at the precise time it's let out.
Sorry if I've read the domestic arrangements incorrectly -it reads that your son and the puppy do not live in the same house as your GD eg the puppy visited a new house?
//why would she choose there ? //

Because she doesn't know she's supposed to go elsewhere. She's not being trained properly and she can't learn by herself. She needs more attention.
Sam there is one thing for sure here and that is it is NOT the pup's fault. It is the owner's fault.
Your suggestion of putting down the newspaper was a good one. Sorry Sam, they obviously don't know better as you have intimated.
As the wonderful Dogfather says, it is 99% of the time the owners that need training rather than the dog.
where is:
I am sorry to draw your attention to these piddling problems .... ( BMJ letters 1975)

smell

and then it is reinforced as a poo-ing place

I had a co worker whose dog wd unload the washer ( how he turned it off ay railly dont knew) and make a nest and lie in it until his mistress returned
I thought it was rather thweet
Bit of pedantry coming up.

Pooh was Winnie’s surname.

Poo is what little children call the act of defecation.

$hi+ is what most adults call it.

Allen
//$hi+ is what most adults call it.//

Among your associates perhaps. Not mine. Poo as a description offends no one.
QED.
Not among my associates either. The only time I hear it used, very occasionally, is when someone in the park exclaims OMG I've stood in dog ****. Well this is Hove actually so one doesn't expect to hear it;-)
Sorry OP, this thread has got diverted.
It has indeed. Back to the subject. I do think the little dog needs far more attention. Puppies don't - and can't - train themselves.
Sorry but that’s going to happen more and more given the schedule that poor doggy has
mm Absolutely. It has no chance. Poor pup is already being blamed as Sam says the dog is now "non grata".
I hate to see dogs in Rescue but this might be the best thing for her. No responsible Rescue or Breeder should allow people who are out all day to adopt a pup IMO.
“Well this is Hove actually so one doesn't expect to hear it.”

I’m going to have that framed and stuck on the wall of my $hi+house!
Allen, it's unfair to divert a thread based on one of your hobby horses.

Rather silly to object to a slangy term and replace it with another - why didn't you stop at defecation?
“ why didn't you stop at defecation?”...

I’m saying nothing.
