can I transplant a mature ( 12 feet + ) crab apple tree, what size root ball should I be aiming for ?any tips at all would be helpful.

You are probably not going to be able to do this without seriously harming the tree. If it has to be moved follow these rules only move the tree when it's dormant possibly dec or jan, take the biggest possible rootball i'd suggest at least a eight foot diameter and keep the roots moist at all times and good luck
