Ticks And Dogs

Yesterday a large fully blood engorged tick dropped off our dog onto the carpet, it was the size of a baked bean! Fortunately it was so slow moving we caught and dispose of it easily.
We do try to check him regularly for ticks but it’s quite difficult as he’s a Black cockapoo, so ticks are not easily seen on him, and because of his curly coat they’re not easily felt either.
We bought some flea and tick stuff to put between his shoulders and behind his neck but I was wondering if anyone has any other tried and tested tick repellent they could suggest?
The area we are currently in is considered ‘high’ for ticks. And of course it’s the season and weather for them anyway :(

Ask your vet for the best recommendation, sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a prescription from the vet for around £12, and buy whatever he recommends, online. Usually saves at least £10.

yup. scalibor or seresto collar. Not cheap but VERY effective. I had to stop using advocate on my dogs because one became sensitive to it and came up in wet blisters. Couldn't use the spot ons as they used to groom each other so went over to scalibor collars. using advocate, I still had to remove live attached and non attached ticks from the dogs, usually 3 or 4 a day over both dogs. the New Forest is horrible for ticks and a Lyme hotspot. Started with the collars and 3 or 4 a day went down to ZERO once the collars had time to work. the only hook with scalibor is that it is dangerous to aquatic wildlife and I don't think that seresto is. Mine were not swimmers so it didn't matter

Dylan has 1000mg Bravecto chewable tablets for ticks and fleas.

One tablet every three months. They are very effective.

thanks for this thread Vagus, Lola has been tearing lumps from herself (also a black Cockapoo) mainly her upper thighs and behind he ears, we've looked and I've combed and brushed her and can't see anything at all and thought it might be grass pollen making her itch, I am concerned about putting a collar on her as she's always wore a vest harness and I think she'd try to get it off

Bobbi, dogs can have piriton if you think its an allergy..might also be harvest mites. What does the vet say?

Bobbisox Lola should get used to a collar very quickly. When you bath her smother her with shampoo and leave on for about 15 mins. This will suffocate any fleas. She could also have a flea allergy which could account for the itching.
We have lots of fleas this year and the vet is saying both Advocate and Frontline don't seem as effective this year. We use Bravecto which seems to be effective
