Have seen these in Southern Spain so was interested on a programme shown on Sky Eden channel. Was very informative. The life cycle and the damage caused, and extent of its invasion North into France.

They are in the south east of England as well. I think our local council destroys them when they find them.

S E England? As part of the life cycle the caterpillar buries itself to pupate. Trees are dug up and shipped all over complete with soil containing the pupae.
We get them here mostly in pine trees. Dangerous to dogs and people. Nasty rash and allergic reactions
The recessionary oak moth can be a serious problem, due to the highly toxic fine hairs that are ejected by the caterpillars.
I believe that there was an outbreak of them in Kew Gardens recently, which had to be treated with specialised equipment.
