Maybe it’s up to them if you get it tho Pasta, I’m not sure
Legally a vet is obliged, on request, to issue a written prescription for a medicine they would be prepared to sell to you themselves. However, they can charge what they like for it . It depends on how much you are saving if its worth it or not .
My vet charges £10 for a prescription.

Okay, thank you
Couple of years back, if he wasn't sleeping, Milo, my Jack Russell was scratching and biting at his back and, try as i might, i couldn't find a single flea on his predominantly white fur. Took him to the vets who told me he had sensitive skin and was probably suffering from a reaction to a bite. She weighed him, snipped his dew-claw, and prescribed a single tablet. The bill was £78 which i thought excessive at the time. However, the tablet worked and i believed it money well spent.
Problem is, he's recently begun scratching quite a lot again, though not yet tearing at his fur. I do use 'Top n Tail' on him regularly but i did catch a flea on him a couple of days back. Toss up whether i risk getting something cheaper on line or taking him back to the vets?

we had Lola there about 4 weeks ago and the vet prescribed Vetpro for healthy skin and coat, that was £97 with the consultation, we have been giving her the capsules as prescribed but she is still scratching and biting herself ( no fleas)
I use Seresto collars on my lot - they are not cheap (around £33) but last around eight months and have totally stopped my lot scratching including one who would tear her fur out in lumps. Make sure you get genuine Seresto though - I use a firm called Animed. Any vet will issue a prescription but charge anything from £10 - £30 so you have to work out if it any cheaper although it usually is. They will also want to see the pet first and again after three months if you want a repeat.
The vet only charged £14.44 for prescribing the steroids so the high cost of the shampoo can't be down to 'prescription charges'.

I’m waiting to find out Barry as nothing was explained when my husband paid the Bill
I use Bravecto on all dogs and cats and the Serestra collars on the dogs. One dog has an allergy and he has a short course of prednisone, eight days in decreasing dosage and wipe his skin with betadine in affected areas. Phone/photo consult as I couldn't get him to the vet meds cost 10 euros
I spent a vast fortune on Alfie trying to treat his various problems. It was only in 2013 that a new vet had the sense to test him for Leishmaniasis. That vet spoke to a few different vets across Europe looking for the right treatment and came up with something called Milteforan which would have cost me about £3,000 for one bottle (a 28 day supply of chemo).

I chose instead to buy a Veterinary Import Licence and purchase it from his old vet in Xativa (passport number and microchip number had to be supplied in order for them to sell me the drug) and someone I knew brought it over for me when they were flying back to the UK. It ended up costing me about £600.

He then had ongoing Allopurinol and intermittent Metronidazole to keep his condition in remission (I wish I'd known at the time to add in Domperidone, but hey ho).

When Alfie became poorly Christmas 2016 we paid £1900 in total for his care which included surgery and removing a fragment of bone from his colon. He died two days later.

I never had insurance as he's had too many problems over the years for me to be able to find affordable insurance - including a twisted gut.

Vets bills are extortionate but you'd do anything within your means to look after them.

Have you thought of putting a baby gro on Lola when she goes out in case it is something in the grass. It could be an allergy to something in her food
Question Author
Well that was the price of the shampoo said the Vets receptionist
My husband, "May i have her prescription?
Receptionist, Yes but that will be another £23 then you will havfe to pay whatever it costs where you buy it from

whet a rip off!
by the wy he told her to keep the prescription
Question Author
cal, I am thinking of putting coconut oil on the pads of her feet as I am sure the allergy is from grass pollen which is quite high just now
I had pet insurance for Tigger and Blue but still had to pay 20% on top for each visit and treatment.
Bobbi, time to find another vet
Question Author
I think they’re much of a sameness Barry,
No poor vets that’s for sure !
Have you tried booties like those used in the US for snow
The consultation fee should cover your follow up appointment, at least it does at my vet’s. I get a repeat prescription every 3 months for £14 and buy the meds online from PetPrescription. They cost ‘only’ £68 per month as opposed to £150+ from the vet’s.
Question Author
At the moment I’ve checked the cost of the shampoo on Amazon ( needs prescription) it’s £17-34 and £23 to get the prescription from the Vet = £40 - 34 and I think you can only use same prescription 3 times so we are waiting to see how far this bottle goes shampoo goes before deciding what to do, we’ve to shampoo her 3 times a week yet the insurance veterinary nurse told us not to keep washing her as it moves the natural oils from her coat !
