Spring Is Coming

I heard the woodpeckers, drumming in the woods yesterday.
It's reassuring to know that spring isn't so far away.

Every spring canaries sing a new song it develops from scratch, mine has just started running a few trills together. The robin is singing for longer every morning and evening. My amelanchier had buds when I looked yesterday and the mini daffs look like they are about two weeks from flowering

A blackbird woke me up this morning, singing his little head off :)

I have mahonia and hebe in flower and smelling lovely.
Also fuchsia and primroses and camellia just coming out.
There is something in flower almost all winter here in the SW.
Jonquils are late, though, only just in bud and usually have them in flower at Christmas.
We have had an exceptionally good winter this year.

The Latin name for woodpeckers is Ringoniia Starrisium.

I envy you. I've never seen nor heard a woodpecker. I don't know if they exist in Ireland.

A quick search, revealed that the greater spotted woodpecker has at least settled in the Emerald Isle, so keep your ears pricked

Thanks Chipchopper. I will do that. I've listened to recordings of woodpeckers pecking so I know what to listen for in the wild, but I've never heard it yet.

Hollows in trees are natural and artificial. The first ones are obtained when an old rotten knot falls out of a tree trunk. The second is made by a woodpecker. Woodpeckers in the spring can make several spare dwellings at once. Luckily, they never get headaches. More arrogant neighbors take advantage of this. From owls to squirrels. Abandoned hollows are occupied by all kinds of bird trifles.
