Tufty was a red squirrel, which has ear tufts, hence the name. Was the one that took the owl chicks a red or a grey ?
What were the owlets skeggy, only the squirrel is usually the prey - and the owl the predator?

death2greys,,they were greys,logman.little owl chicks,cetti.
Ah, I understand now skeggy. Yes, it wouldn't be a problem for the grey to prey on such tiny owlets. What a shame the little parents weren't about as they would have put up a real fight - and the grey might have been the loser! Good luck for next spring.
Just been into Woolworths and was looking at their calenders called British Wildlife. First picture, the grey squirrel!!! Not a sign of the native red squirrel.
I am an ardent nature lover, conservationist, reserve warden etc but I am afraid that the best cure for grey squirrels comes out of the barrel of a .22 air rifle.

I tried to shoot a grey squirrel with my .22 air rifle and the pellet bounced of so I used my 12g shotgun and that finished him off. also traps are good in the winter time becuse the food you put in them I traped and shot 67 greys
