I Am A Bit Late In The Day

(remember that I am deaf and live alone)

This had been going on for 7-8 years but I genuinely didn't know.


However Mr Maxie was groomed last Monday and after I put him in the back of the car and I called up to see a friend. However on the hill to see that friend another friend was bringing her grandchildren into the house and spotted me.

Her husband brought the children in and she sat beside me in the front of the car and of course the two of us started giving the wag in the wall (ie conversation)

This friend adores dogs and in fact had just got her wee dog PTS the previous Friday (he was 14) - she started crying in my car and I understood fully then we went into the convo.

However she kept looking at my Maxie ie loving him and loving him but she said to me Jenny he is crying - well I definitely can't hear him crying any time but I guess he probably he does. After a convo and her saying oh God I gotta go - he is crying so sadly. That was that.

I know the above is long-winded but I put Maxie out a good lot throughout the back to do a pee and he does it but luckily enough I do have mats in the dining room which I can wash in the machine and lately I am having to do this nearly every day cos Maxie is peeing.

Now bless him it is at the back of the door where the urine stain is and now I am realising - he is probably crying (and I can't hear) to let him out and he is peeing on the mats.

Now for the real answer - whilst I can't hear him - is there anything I can do - when he is crying to get out - ie a deep bell or any answers would do. Thanks for any help.

jj - could he be crying because he is in pain ? Maybe a visit to the vet is necessary.

Agree with darren. He may face a urinary tract infection (UTI) which is very very painful. Vets pronto.

no pain whatsoever - I just can't hear him to go to pee. When I have had other friends here - they have all heard him crying (ie lockdown/pandemic) but sure I didn't take it on.

No I am 100% that is my fault that I can't hear him because you know what - he doesn't pee anywhere else.

PS - he was at vets about a month ago getting his wee vaccinsations No - it is definitely this corned beef lady - ie deaf).

right - perhaps I could think of the cat flap - ie I do have PVC back door - -who would I contact that for that - - thanks for answers.

Any decent handyman should be able to do that jj. What about one you have used before or ask your friends for a recommendation.

I think you really must take your dog to the Vet - obviously you didn't mention the crying a month ago so Vet would not investigate.

BTW get a cat magnetic flap that only he can use by having a magnet on his collar which will open the door.
It's so long since I used one that I don't remember too much about them.

If you put the wet carpet bits he used outside the flap he should go out to use them initially.
How old is Maxie now jj?

8 years old and believe me it is all my fault because when he wants to pee it is right at the back door and probably crying -

In the meantime could you let him out regularly, say every hour during the day and evening so he has the opportunity to pee?

It's not too late to train Maxie to come and paw at you when he needs to go out, JJ.

We take our dog into the garden at regular intervals throughout the day so he can do a wee. We never wait for him to ‘ask’, we just take him. He knows what to do, does his business, then comes back in.
From what you’re saying, it doesn’t really seem as if he’s in pain, he’s just trying to get your attention so he can go out for a wee.
If I was you, I’d just take him into the garden every couple of hours, get him used to knowing what’s expected of him and if he does his wee, give him a small treat when you’re both back in the house. He’ll soon get the hang of doing a wee in command.

Having re read your post, I agree with Murraymints, take him out hourly. And persevere until he gets the hang of doing a wee for you, rather than him waiting till he needs to.

We know when Poppy dog needs a pee _ she takes multiple flying leaps at the back door! JJ I would take your little love for a vet check and then discuss the issue with them. They may have some good ideas for you. Xx

thanks for the answers - all great - but I did forgot to say that - he was after being in the groomers for all long two hours - and I came home after the first friend's conversation and he ran straight to the water so he was actually thirsty as he gulped gulped the water.

I am sure other deaf people have the same problem. Your vet might have an idea but also a society who help the deaf or even Guide Dogs or assistance dog trainers.
