Thank you for all your advice. I don't feed him in his cage, just outside it. When he's in there, it's with all his toys, bed and the radio on. However, if I give him his kong filled with something, I've noticed he won't entertain it until I come home and he is out of his cage, in his bed infront of the fire.

I have wondered whether if I remove his wee pad, will he just go regardless, or will he hold it?? I have the same problem when he goes in the car, because there is a wee pad in the boot with him, he always goes to poo and wee!!!!

Okay it sounds like he is not going potty before you take him somewhere or put him in his crate, unless you leave him for too long. Like I said before dogs who use wee pads, as you all call them over there, don't have to learn to HOLD it because they always have a place to go at the first inkling that they need to go, then as they get older they finally are able to hold it because their bladders and such are bigger, but I know older (1-5 yr olds) dogs that can't hold it for more than a few hours, they always are going and it's usually not allot just small amounts,. Pups need to learn/develop the ability to hold it. Also if they have a med problem it is hard to hold it, get them checked.

You need to re-train if you have already tried to train him..if you haven't taken the time to train well enough he is not trained. Go to where I said before if you do not want to there then go to: http://www.hssv.org/LIBRARY/PDF/Behavior/housetraining.pdf

What you put in their kong has to be something they truely LOVE and don't get normally, this makes it a treat for them, also exercise is the key when leaving them.

One thing I forgot to mention, the wee pad makes him go, it smells like wee, if they are the same we use over here. MAKE sure he goes before taking him with you, that means taking him out and PHYSICALLY watching him go, then don't use a pad, stop every 30 minutes see if he needs to go, learn his potty routine, and his potty dance that he is going to go, eat, drink, sleep and play or excitement makes a dog go, those are the triggers, any one or combo of them makes them have to go. If they play and drink alot of water they'll need to go within 15 min. then probably again in 20-30 min then maybe again in an hour or so, just like us if we were to drink a large amount. Those pads could be hleping with his problems as its like you are taking the toilet with you! If the pad is where he goes then he will always use it - much like when you keep a patch of garden with urine/faeces on it so the dog gets the idea that this is the loo.
