my kitty has a cold, and I'm not quite sure what to do for him. please help?

are you sure its just a cold? honestly unless you are really sure then a quick check at the vet's would be sensible

While woofgang's advice is certainly sensible, you need to know that cats do get "colds". They are similar in symptoms to humans, although they cannot be transmitted from one species to another. The kitten will have a runny nose and eyes, experience a fever and be noticeably off its feed. Cats need to smell their food and with mucous clogging their sense of smell, they aren't very interested in eating. Not to worry... same as humans, about 10 days to 2 weeks will see improvement. Take him to the vet, it may be a cold but also may be cat flue which needs medical treatment. This is usually a runny nose, sneezing, going off food and generally being unwell, please get it checked out as a course of tablets and a shot of penicillin may be all he needs to sort him out.

Give him strong smelling food like sardines, pillchard tuna etc as they need to smell their food

Yes, vet immediately please. Cat 'flu can be very severe, particularly in young, old or unhealthy animals. It won't always clear up by itself, and there's a risk of secondary bacterial infection which can lead to severe and potentially fatal disease if left untreated. Your vet will be able to assess the degree of illness and take appropriate steps. It is very variable between animals and so to be on the safe side she's better to be checked.

I agree, take the kitty to the vet. Im on the phone with my vet every time something doesn't seem right with my kitty and let them decide if a ride to the vet is nessesary. a phone call takes no time and costs nothing. its the least you can do for him. If the ride to the vet is nessesary then do it. after all EVERY pet owner should be prepared for something like this. good luck and i hope he feels better.
