putting darling dog to sleep this afternoon
I have an appointment at 4pm to bring my beautiful girl (Keela) in to be put to sleep. Although I have had dogs die before, I have never had to do this. Can anyone let me know what will happen please?
I have read some websites but wanted a personal experience of it so that I will know what to expect and therefore be as calm as possible for Keela.
Thanks

You have the option of staying with Keela, or leaving her with the vet and coming away, and you might want to consider this as a less upsetting option.
I am sure the thoughts of all animal-lovers here are with you.
A.
I am so sorry for you shivvy my heart goes out to you it really does x x
I would just like to say from experience that although this is the hardest thing you ever have to do as a pet owner you are doing it for the right reasons and I am sure Keela would want this so she doesn't have to suffer. I have had dogs put to sleep and that is exactly what it is like, they have an injection then drift off.
The thing that is most soul destroying is the guilt you may feel but this is a natural if not somewhat unfounded guilt. I think its because dogs cannot talk and cannot confirm this is what they want but you know your dog as you said she is your darling therefore you wouldn't have done this unless you thought it was for the best.
She will always be with you though and as vanquish says she knows you love her lots.
My love and thoughts are with you at this sad timex x
Shivvy, if you are reading this you will realise how we all feel for you at this sad time. It is the final act of love you can do for your beloved Keela. If you stayed with her you will know how peaceful the process is, and if you could not bring yourself to be there, then be assured that the whole thing would have been so quick and calm, that she would have felt the relief before she drifted away.
You did not say what was wrong with her, perhaps in time you can share this with us if it will help you (and others) to talk about it. It is something we all have to face, and even if you have a houseful of dogs like me, the loss of each one brings its own sorrow and pain.
My favourite saying at a time like this is 'better a day too soon, than a minute too late'.
They become much-loved members of your family and grief is perfectly normal. Keela would have loved you to the very peaceful end knowing that you were making the right decision.
7 years down the line my eyes still well up thinking about my collie Bess who we had for 16 years and who almost asked us to take her to the vet.
We're all thinking of you and yours. Take care.
Shivvy. Just wanted to say I'm so sorry to hear your news and I hope you managed or will manage to get some peace from knowing that her suffering has ended. I have my beautiful cuddly female cat that I stupidly love more like a child. She is terminally ill and I know it is likely she will have to be put to sleep at some point, so I know how you feel, and am thinking of you and sending some hugs down the line.
I have only just read your thread today so my reply is a little late. However I wanted to offer my sympathy as it is a very upsetting time.
I had my dog put to sleep nearly 6 weeks ago. Not a day goes by when I don't think of her or miss her.
I got a lot of comfort from the kind people on these boards and it really did help me.
Although my reply is late and not of much use you are not alone and I do hope everything was peaceful at the end for you both. Take Care.
Hello Shivvy - I too had to make the dreadful decision to take my little Lucy (cocker spaniel) to the vet 2 days ago to be put to sleep. I have never had to do this before and although I know it was the right decision I feel so bad about it - she perked up when we got to the vets. Lucy had cancer in the anal gland and had the glands and sacs removed 15 months ago. After this she was fine but the cancer returned - I first noticed something was wrong 2 months ago with funny shaped poos. Finally she couldn't go to the toilet properly and was constantly squatting and trying to pass the tumour. She went downhill very suddenly as she was fine a week ago and it took only 4 days before I realised that she couldn't go on like this and had had enough - her quality of life was gone and she wasn't eating properly, just being sick. The vet said there was nothing more they could do. I'm missing her so much and still can't believe she isn't coming back. I hope you are feeling a little better now and although it is very early days for us both at the moment, I do know that we will be reunited with our little friends one day.
