why are the seals culled? is it for enviromental reasons, are there too many of them to maintain a healthy population.if they are killed just for their fur and are in danger of becoming extinct then its wrong. but if the population is booming out of control and the cull is for the common good then culling is right and it would be stupid to waste the fur. i think that sometimes the big black eyes and cuddly fur irrationalise people who would not give a tiss if the seals looked like crabs after all we are all prepared to let others torture baby chickens for our selfish pleasure and indulgance of cheap meat, the chicken a lot of us will cook for mummy today is about 7 weeks old, has been crammed into a shed with about 18 sq inches of dung to call its home, nothing to do all day but eat high protein food which makes it put on weight faster than its immature bones can carry ,it is unable to peck as its top beak was cut in half so that it could not harm or be harmed by its 2000 siblings. and all of this is done in your name so that you can feed 5 people meat for less than 5 quid.if of course you are a vegan then this does not apply to you and you may sign the petitions without any remorse cos why should mr cuddly get the pity of people 5000 miles away who should stop interfering in other peoples buisness and at least start putting their own houses in order by boycotting intensive farming.

enjoy your lunch

Again, thank you for highlighting this. I have signed it.

Cheers dilf - all valid comments and animal welfare is important whether it is veal crates, pig breeding or whatever. I presume you have signed the petition by the RSPCA against battry hens . if not - sign it now from here: http://www.thehenshouse.co.uk/links.html

The issues with the seal cull are based around the fact that the over fishing of the cod which has decimated the re-stocking, has been simply blamed on seals. The value of the fur and meat is so low to the Canadain economy, it appears the seals are taking the blame for useless and weak government. the nature of the slaughter is also the concern - and the welfare of the wild animal is something that is high on the agenda of the majority of people.

Read the comments form their Resources Minister here and wonder what next: http://www.boycott-canada.com/info/index.htm (note - site has some pretty strong images)

And as for crabs you mention? - next resource to go seems to be the snow crab that the fishermen turned to once they realised cod was finished - and guess what - its about to be unviable according to research as now over-fished - and that wasn't 6 million seals having a seafood buffet...
