I was going to say goldfish, till I saw the "son can play with" bit, perhaps not wise to cuddle those!

Thought about a rat? Despite what people believe they are incredibly tame, usually gentle and extremly bright, mine used to sit on my shoulder whilst I watched TV and eat Maltesers, twirling it round in his 'hands' nibbling all the chocolate off- was very endearing.

Is a cat completely out of the question? Many can and do adapt well to indoor living. Ragdoll cats are particularly biddable.
I agree a rat is ideal. They don't bite like hamsters, mice and gerbils and are not incontinent like mice. They are very friendly and mine used to sit on mu shoulder when I was do the housework. The only thing is that they need a lot of companionship so you may need to get two if they are to be left. They are extremely bright and love to play and work things out for food.
Rabbits can make lovely house pets. They are easy to look after, and can be easilly litter trained if you wanted them to have the run of a room every so often.
With plenty of handling they can become friendly and tame pets.
My friend had 2 house rabbits when she moved into her flat, they were lovely, the larger of the two (not sure of the breed, but it was bigger then my cat!) used to sleep on the end of her daughters bed!
Get a kitten.

I would say a cat too. I live in a first floor flat and mine lives quite happily as an indoor cat (apart from when she decided to jump out the window this morning and scared herself silly!) but what they don't know won't hurt them! we are moving to a house soon so she can go outside then.

Hi

If you want a pet that is more friendly that you son can play with I would recommed a budgie. The younger age you get a budige from is better. If you get a budgie that is around about 6 weeks old then it is very easy to tame them and teach them to do tricks or in some cases if it is a male you can teach them to talk. Female budgies can learn to talk but males are much better at talking then females are.

Hope my advice helps you
