Does anyone know if puppies can catch a disease from a garden pond? we recently lost our puppy and they still do not know the cause of her death and we will never know now but we need to know if it could have come from our pond as we need to know in order for us to get another puppy.

Sorry to hear that emluvztow, we had a pond which got a bit neglected.. our dog was sick twice after going in the garden and we wondered why, we saw him drink the water the second time and later that night he was sick- must of been the water in the pond! we covered the pond up till we cleared it and filled it in, hes been ok since.must be something in the water apart from being stagnant water

There was two fish in the pond but we've been told that the puppy eating the fish wasn't the problem; as appartently it would just give her more protein. thanks for your reply

Ph: it sounds like Giardia from the water..but I don't think it can kill a pup unless treatment is not forthcoming..

I would test your water. Then start to look at your garden, I don't know how it's situated or anything, does it get run off from the lawn at all at any time, or from your neighbors yard? Do you or they use fertilizer or pesticide? what kind of plants are around? Are you sure they are safe for a puppy? Can anyone throw anything into your yard from the outside and poison your pup?

I had a lady customer, since I am her trainer, she asked me the same, her dog got sick and the vet was stumped on what it was, he recovered, (sorry for your loss), but they were stumped...but after talking to her I discovered her hubby puts bug repellent on and when he's out with the pup in the yard, the pup plays with him and occassionally will lick at him and mouth him. She took this info to the vet and said yes that could have been it....also she has a creek run thru her property and he could have gotten something from up stream..we are not sure..Check it all on your dogs level also, what can they get into, they can find the most strange things, and get themselves into trouble. I told her to keep her pup on leash if she goes out, and tell her hubby to wear long sleeves not repellent on his hands or arms, until they work more with him to get him listening to them.

Hope this helps...Good Luck...~/:\~

Our pup fell in our pond, well she was nudged in by our other dog, but she was ok. Sorry about your pup but as others have mentioned, I would think it was something a bit more sinister.

Thanks for all your replies our pond is not near anything really, it is surrounded by stones and the neighbours fence is not too close to the pond. My mam is an animal nurse and all her collegues are all stumped about her death and she faught right till the end. They believe that the only possibilty is that she had parvo or something from the fish. She was tested for loads of things but everything has come back negative. Does anyone know what is the best advise if she had parvo, into getting a new puppy and cleaning the house and garden?

well your response puzzles me, they should have come up with Parvo if that is what it was, test should show that?but okay...
