how can I get my cat to recognise her name?

I got my cats when they were 7 months old, and decided to rename them (i couldn't bare to call them the names their previous owner had chosen). But I dont think they've ever reacted to the new names i've chosen. Could it be that i've got 2 and always seem feed them at the same time - or could they have been so confused when i renamed them that they dont know what their names are? They're indooor cats so i dont ever have to call them in from outside.
