Problem is it pongs, i clean it out regularyl, have litter tray liners in it but the smell lingers through the house! It is a tray with a lid on too and its driving me batty!

1.use catsan religously - no other litter does as good a job!
2. as soon as a poop is done have a 'poop scooper' and scoop it out into small bag and chuck it. this saves on litter too
3. get an oil burner and a big can of OUST!
our flat is fine apart from the immediate aftermath (but then same could be said of my other half too - hee hee hee!!)

Don't think so - I've used all sorts and not had a problem with any of them (apart from the sawdust pellets). I can see why you might want a cover on, but like I say, maybe it's not letting the air in.
I just have a large, open tray - I scoop out solids like pagey3, and give it an occasional shake (the cat has a habit of using the same spot for one and the other).
After Cat's laid solids down, he gets off the tray, and turns around to cover it with litter using his front paws. Maybe your cat's not able to do that because of the cover. Is it the solids or liquids that's causing the offending smell?

I have to say, I've tried many litters over the years, and the best one I've found is Bob Martins crystals. They're not cheap (3.99 a bag) but when you've had enough of cat odours you'll pay anything! It says on the bag that as long as you remove the 'lumps' it'll last 4 weeks. But that's a big fat lie! Even getting rid of the squidy stuff, a week and a half is as much as I can get out of it. And I always have an air freshner sat close to litter box ('hooded' like yours).
I dunno if it down to the cat litter or the cat!!! I have two. Both use a litter tray (so we have four of the wretched things in the house - 1 per cat + 1 and another one just to be sure). The older cat has used one for years and it never seems to pong. The young one, well stone me, it STINKS. And he has terrible flatulence!! Its probably a case that I am de sensitised to the older one. The oil burner works for me. I have always used Sainsburys clumping cat litter which seemed to work wonders with the older cat. Now I am trying every litter under the sun just to get rid of the appalling smell!!!
We have had cats in our home for many years, in numbers ranging from two to five. Odor has never been a problem for us once we learned two simple rules. 1. Buy good quality clumping litter and scoop it often. 2. limit your cats diet to dry food (even occasional bits of human food are a no-no) Since then any odors were our fault , not their's.
