Allotment. What do you feed your foxes on? Gelda
oooh what a lovely story gelda ....so sorry to read you've had a nightmare of a year health-wise & I hope that you continue to make good progress...it's a long hard road but you'll get there.

Please keep us posted - lots of wildlife & 'birdy' people on here & it's good to have a separate category.

(thanks to wildwood for posting those lovely pics).

What do you feed your foxes on Allotment?
hi, sorry but was cooking old mans brekkie!
anyway, i feed them on all my scraps from the dinners at night eg: potatoes, bones & fatty bits of meat, fish, & any veg thats left over, all goes in one big dish mixed up like a big stew! i then take it up the allotment & divide it up in 2 different dishes so they don't all fight over the same dish! in the week i go to the local market & there's a stall that sells all the offcuts of cooked meats (quite cheap) so i usually get them a couple of bags to mix in with our scraps, so all in all they eat virtually anything thats put down, bones from the meats, veggies in gravy, sometimes i even mix bread in the gravy, they love it! in our local tesco they do a big turkey drumstick for 99p so sometimes i treat them to a couple , (about once a month)
the guy on the allotment next to mine gives them his cheese sandwiches in a bowl & they've always gone in about an hour !! :-)
What a lovely tale to read on a dull grey Sunday afternoon- thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you gelda for sharing that with us.

Like to echo everyone else and ask that you keep us updated on your fox family.

Take care
Boo
:-)
Just read your wonderful story gelda & thank you for the lovely pic's too wildwood - it's so encouraging that people take such an interest in wildlife.

I'm so sorry to hear about your illness too gelda & wish you a speedy recovery.

Take care, Smudge. -x-
great story gelda, can someone please tell me what an allotment is please? thankyou much!
An allotment is a piece of land where you can grow fruit & vegetables.

Our neighbour has one, but he's so tight, he even sells his spuds to an elderly lady who lives on her own next door to him!!!!
an allotment is a plot of land rented of the local council, usually there are quite a few numbers of them on one site,

That was good timing allotment. ;o}
smudge - good grief what a tighwad! we always have loads of veggies left , even when we've filled our freezer so we wash & bag them up to give our neighbours, they always ask if we want anything for them but there is no way i would accept money, they usually buy us a little pressie at christmas (like a box of chocs) so thats nice, sometimes if we've to much i take them to the local "help the aged" shop for them to sell , :-)
excellent timing! we do the companion planting as well, its amazing the flowers & herbs that deter certain bugs, but bring in the good bugs!
the foxes have their own little hideaways but always come for the food, the ponds are full of frogs that keep the slug population down, the ferral cats keep the mice at bay, the cats then chase the squirrels who then tease them back again after nicking all the bird peanuts! so all in all an allotment is so much more than just a plot of land, every year the butterflies come for the buddlia trees, the birds nest in the hedges all around the allotment, there's so much going on all the time even in winter, makes me feel so lucky to be able to enjoy these things especially as i live next to the city centre, so a bit of wildlife & nature is like heaven away from the traffic & noise! :-)

I really envy you Allotment! When I was well I used to go up to the wood where I fed the foxes every day, I had bird feeders and so many different birds used to come to feed, I also had a badger ( I'll post a pic of her if Wildwood wouldn't mind doing it again for me ) who used to love peanuts and peanut butter sandwhiches, the foxes also like these. There was one thing I was going to mention ( if you don't mind Allotment ) you should never give foxes cooked bones, they splinter and can get stuck in their stomach causing bleeding and often death, my friends husband is a vet and often deals with wildlife and he told me this, the foxes will eat cooked bones because they dont know any better, apparently raw bones are ideal because they don't splinter. otherwise you're giving them a great diet. Have you tried raw chicken wings, they really love them also raw eggs ( not cooked ) they are part of their natural diet, it's fascinating to watch the foxes pick them up without breaking them. Anyway keep up the good work. Gelda x
thanks gelda, will remember not to give them any cooked bones, & will definatly look forward to watching them with the eggs, great pictures,
thanks wildwood :-)
Hi gelda
What lovely pictures ..the one of the badger is beautiful ..what a handsome chap ! I used to feed the urban foxes when we lived in south London ..lovely creatures..
Sorry to hear you have been unwell and wish you all the best on the road to recovery .keep posting the pics !!
thanks for the explanation, seems like a really neat idea. i live in the country so i guess i take it for granted. for a city dweller it looks like an excellent way to 'get back to nature' as they say. love the foxes, they appear to be friendly little characters. something i'm sure kids would find facinating(adult's included) i get the 'nature' of your a/b handle now allotement10, cheers!
Just came across this great thread! I've really enjoyed looking at your brilliant pics gelda.I love the one of the 2 foxes trying to psyche each other out! Its always lovely to hear of people helping and being kind to foxes or any wildlife of course.Did you see the Bill Oddie programme tonight, where the old man was feeding the badgers in his garden? They were even coming up to his front door to see if he was coming out with more food for them!..Hope you continue to improve health wise gelda :-)
hiya gelda, haven't seen you on here for a while, are you ok? let us know how you're getting on we miss your posts!
