Chinas brutal market in cats and dogs for slaughter supposedly closed last year.. but as todays Daily Mail p26-27 reveal, its booming as never before. Cages packed full of cats waiting to be sold to end up in tiger, phoenix and dragon soup. When taken from the cages for a customer the cats and dogs are half killed with an iron bar as clients want fresh meat. Thats a brief description - but the list of brutality goes on. To anyone who likes cats and dogs, I am sure it is obvious those responsible for this cruelty have crossed the line - including those who purchase animals for the meat and the consumers. This market for animal abuse is according to the Mail at three birds market in Guangzhou. Obviously there is something that needs to be done about about this.

I read a previous article about this and wrote a harshly protesting letter to the Chinese embassy in London at the time. Needless to say, I didn't even receive the courtesy of a reply and I expect my letter ended up in the bin. But I guess until we hit where it hurts in terms of sanctions and not buying their cheap textiles and other goods, nobody will take the slightest notice.

I was stationed in Hong Kong in the early 70s, and seen this sort of thing first hand, both there, in China itself, and Korea.

Its a horrendous way to treat animals I agree, but before we stick our noses into whats happening over there, we should sort out our own house first, we still have battery hens, the way cattle are transported is cruel, Angling is just torturing fish.

Sorry if that goes against the general consencus, but thats my view.

It's not so much sticking our noses in other peoples business in this case - Rather you can't just stand by and let it happen when its wrong.
Some Chinese folks are doing great things with the Pandas but there is just this other eliment letting things down - and something should be done about it. Obviously there are other things that need putting right all over the world including this country. We live on a planet not just a country and to make sure every thing is going right, or at least to have some say in the matter, is a sort of responsibility you shouldn't really ignore.

I still stand by my answer, its what I think, however, I accept your well written critism, its well put.

I was a professional breeder for many years. Myself and all of my aquaintances stopped inporting our animals to china and japan. We found out they used our animals for breeding. The litters and any unwanted dogs or bitches were sold to market sellers who used to put the animals, pedigree as well, in big cages in the market place. Each customer paid for a spear if they wanted 2 they paid for 2 or 3 or 4. The idea was to kill the animal by spearing it throught the cage. when it was dead, they took it home skinned it and used it as food as we do beef and pork etc. Just how horrible is that. It made me so angry when we found out.

Thats a grim story Tashare. It makes me darn furious too. Other folks should boycott the market in the trade.
