iv just got 5 new fish 2 of wich are coy the others are different types of goldfish yesterday we bought them to go to my pond in my garden. the pond is a good 6 foot wide and about 2 feet deep. it sits into the decking. we let them in anyway yesterday and havent seen them since and they havent eaten the food we put in? i dunno wat to do. any advice or info or anyth8ing?? thanks xx
they probably have just gone into hiding while they settle in, alternativly you may have a predator such as a heron in the vacinity, if you have & your pond is not netted they can empty it of fish in no time. If your fish have gone ask any local pond owner if they've had problems & get your pond netted before buying any more. In this area they are a major problem but as they are protected birds you cann't do much about them
they may have gone into hiding - but........we had problems with golden orfe some years ago, when they are transferred to a new habitat they jump out. We found them dead by the side of the pond - think they are the only species of fish that do it though.
Probably in hiding under some plants etc. Fish take a while to adjust to new surroundings, and being cold blooded do not need to eat very often (in cold weather). Give it at least a couple of weeks before you start to panic.
Incidentally, Koi is the japanese word for Carp. Goldfish are also carp (koi). In english speaking countries we tend to misuse the term to mean "carp with interesting markings"
thanks guys.
they showed up.
they absolutely love the pond.
we have a shallow shelf around the edge of the pond and the keep swimming into it.
its really cute,
they stick together all the time.
we'r gettin a net next week (had to order it etc.)
thanks again
xx
Glad they've turned up suzie, but think about some precautions against herons. As I said around here nearly everybody I know with a pond has lost fish thru them & it would be a shame to loose fish just when the weathers getting nice enough to enjoy them
thanks yeh
wer gettin the net at the end of the week.
and a fake heron too coz apparently only one comes to a pond at a time
hope they dont catch on
theyr clever *******.
